Hello everyone! Pozdrav svima!

This week I'm going to show you how to play when faced Equal Opportunity ruleset.

The Ruleset

First of all lets see what this ruleset is all about. How to take advantage of it and what you need to pay attention to.

ruleset_equal-opportunity.png

All units gain the opportunity ability which allows them to attack the unit with the lowest health on the enemy team.

When faced this ruleset keep in mind a couple of things:

  • Keep the lower HP monsters in front, so they get attacked first.
  • Speed is the king (isn't it always? 😄). If you strike first you get the chance to open the way for your slower monsters to do deal damage to higher HP enemy monsters.
  • Redirect enemy damage with Taunt monsters, so your other monsters have time to deal damage
  • Use monsters with Martyr ability placed between two of your stronger monsters so it buffs them both when it dies.

Some of the low HP monsters that I like to use depending on the type of damage I'm expecting, so it can sustain a take/evade/mitigate some hits and not just die on the first one.

I mentioned monsters with Taunt ability and their use in this ruleset. It's best if you can use monsters that are able to mitigate received damage, depending on the damage type. Shield and Void are the ones to look for, but Forcefield can be a game changer too. Of course, if they can Heal themselves that's a great bonus.

But, my favorite approach to this ruleset is it use monsters with Martyr ability, in a sandwich between two stronger monsters (preferably with two attack types, or Double Strike). Make sure that Martyr monster is of lower HP so it gets killed first. Only trick with this ability is that only the soulbound reward cards have it.

Some of the mentioned monsters I used in the battle I will show you in this post, so make sure you read on.

THE BATTLE

This is the part of the post where I will show you one of my battles featuring Equal Opportunity ruleset.

I used a monster with Martyr ability nicely tucked in between two heavy hitters, but it almost backfired at me. Read on and you will find out what, how and why.

Battle Ruleset

I will try to explain each part of the ruleset, so you get the better understanding what was I thinking when I picked my line-up.

Ruleset.png

Equal Opportunity
All Monsters have the Opportunity ability.
Keep lower HP monsters in front. Monsters who have two attack types should always be preferred.

Are You Not Entertained?
Players may play one additional gladiator card in the battle.
Gladiator cards are one of the most powerful ones, so make sure you use them if you can.

Fire & Regret
All units receive the Return Fire ability at the start of the battle.
Use Amplify ability if you can, and remember that monsters with Reflexion Shield won't take damage from reflected attacks.

Mana cap for this battle is 27 mana
This is mid mana pool, so we have to optimize mana cost of Monsters we choose.

Available splinters
For this battle we had Fire, Water, Life, Death and Dragon splinters available. My opponent and I both chose Life, but with different summoners.

Battle Strategy

Since we had Are You Not Entertained ruleset, I wanted to use some of the strong Gladiator cards. And who better then Tatiana Blayde. I rented Lux Vega summoner few seasons ago and I'm renting her ever since. It's awesome and it gave me all the buffs I needed.

My opponent went with Grandmaster Rathe for that extra Armor and Amplify, but his damage output wasn't high enough to keep up with my team.

Battle Line-Up

You can see the line-up from both teams in battle screenshot right after this section. I will go through my line-up and explain why was each card picked and put in that spot.

SUMMONER
Summoner

LUX VEGA

Neutral splinter Legendary promo summoner that costs 5 mana. Shee buffs the team with extra Speed, Armor and Health.

+1 Speed to friendly Monsters.
+1 Armor to friendly Monsters.
+1 Health to friendly Monsters.

This is one the best and most used summoners in the game. I chose this summoner because I needed extra armor and speed, and extra health is always good to have.
1st POSITION ("TANK")
Tank

PELACOR CONJURER

Life splinter Common card. Costs only 2 mana and has no attack, but it's packed with some great abilities..

Flying - Has an increased chance of evading (25%) Melee or Ranged attacks from Monsters who do not have the Flying ability.
Magic Reflect - When hit with Magic damage, does reduced Magic damage back to the attacker.
Divine Shield - The first time the Monster takes damage it is ignored.
Phase - Magic attack can miss this Monster.

I picked this Monster as a tank because I wanted it to reflect the magic (and ranged) damage back to attackers.
2nd POSITION
2ndPosition

DAX PARAGON

Life splinter Epic card. Costs only 2 mana and has 1 Magic attack.

Amplify - Increases Magic Reflect, Return Fire, and Thorns damage to all enemy monsters by 1.
Affliction - When a Monster with Affliction hits a target, it has a chance of applying Affliction on the target causing it to be unable to be healed.

I picked this Monster for the Amplify ability.
3rd POSITION
3rdPosition

JARED SCAR

Life splinter Legendary card. Costs 7 mana, has 6 Melee attack.

Bloodlust - Every time it defeats an opponent, it gets +1 to all stats.
True Strike - This monster's attacks cannot miss.
Piercing - If Melee or Ranged attack damage is in excess of the target's Armor, the remainder will damage the target's Health.

I picked this Monster for the amazing damage it can do when it gets going.
4th POSITION
4thPosition

VENARI MARKSRAT

Neutral splinter rare soulbound reward card. Costs 3 mana, has 1 Ranged attack.

Martyr - When this Monster dies, adjacent Monsters get +1 to all stats.

I picked this Monster to be the target for Opportunity attacks and then to buff the adjacent two monsters when it dies.
5th POSITION
5thPosition

TATIANA BLAYDE

Neutral splinter Legendary Gladiator card. Costs 8 mana and has 2 Ranged and 3 Melee attack.

Close Range - Can perform ranged attacks from the first position.
Bloodlust - Every time it defeats an opponent, it gets +1 to all stats.

I picked this Monster for her amazing attack capabilities. Just made a mistake with her positioning, should've swapped places with Jared Scar.
6th POSITION
5thPosition

SOUL FIEND

Life splinter Legendary card. Costs 0 mana, has 1 melee attack.

I picked this monster as a spot filler, and to waste one opponent's attack on it.

Battle Flow

This was quite short battle, even though it went of for 7 rounds, but they were quick rounds.

Round1Title.png

Round1.gif

Everything almost fell apart in the first round for me. My Tatiana got hit by a Sneak attack getting her HP below my Martyr monster, making her the target of Opportunity attacks, and getting killed before the Martyr monster, losing the chance to get buffed. Thankfully, my Jared Scar got buffed and went on a killing-spree.

Round23Title.png

round23.gif

In round two my Dax Paragon died, leaving my team with only 2 monsters alive versus opponent's five. But my Jared Scar was unstoppable, he took out a monster in each round, bringing the numbers closer now.

Round4-7Title.png

round4-7.gif

In the final rounds Jared continued his kill-spree, but it took him 2 rounds to get Helmet Kharafax down.

Battle Result

This was Modern Ranked battle in middle of Gold 3 league in the first season of the new Ranked System. I miss playing in Gold 1, as now I'm struggling getting into Gold 2 against all these maxed out decks. But slowly I'm going to get there... 😎

For those who wish to learn more

I mentioned few different approaches to this ruleset, so I would like to show an example of couple of them.

splitter1.png

This was a battle where I successfully used a Martyr monster in between two heavy hitters and totally dominated my opponent, thanks to taking advantage of other two rulesets.

splitter2.png

In this battle I used two low HP monsters and it worked out perfectly.

splitter3.png

This battle is a schoolbook example on how to use Taunt Monsters in this ruleset. It evaded some hits, it got healed, and all the while the rest of the team decimated opponent team.
