Battle Mage Secrets - Weapons Training Does Wonders

The theme for the current "Battle Mage Secret" challenge is Explosive Weaponry ruleset this time! This means all units gain the Blast ability. It's not always easy to get the specific ruleset, but if you play hard enough, you definitely can find one! Well that's what I thought - but it seems that either I am very unlucky or there are just too many rulesets these days and I can't seem get the selected one.

So I decided to share an interesting battle that I encountered.

Anyway, I thought it would be still be interesting to introduce some useful cards and show how their strengths can be maximised especially with a particular ruleset. In this post, the featured card is a Legendary Soulbound card, Aves Sturgis!

Aves Sturgis comes with the interesting ability called Weapons Training! As a Magic attack, Weapons Training is the most useful because Magic damage can hit anywhere within the lineup! There are many interesting cards to pair with Aves Sturgis, and there's also a deadly Summoner too!

As usual, here's the lore for Aves Sturgis for your reading interest:

Aves Sturgis is the high mystic of the Long Wing, a parliament of horned owlkin that reside in Freywood in the Land of Prosperity’s Grand Praetorian Plain. He is the seventy-ninth generational shaman and derives his shamanic powers from his ancestors, his extensive training and education, dreamwalking, and the wisdom and omens of nature itself. On occasion and during ceremonies, he wears the teeth of the great lichen beast, Vutagar, that he pulled from the creature's maw in his younger years as part of his journey to awakening. Now, eighty years on, Aves still visits Vutagar in the forest, where they commune with nature's spirits together.

Even though much of his life has been spent in or near the forests and in communion with Chuthar, God of Nature and the Fey, Aves has remained primarily focused on Khymia, Goddess of Life and the Upper Planes. He believes that the nature-based path of revelation cannot be walked without the guidance of Khymia.

As leader of the Long Wing, Aves is highly respected by both the owlkin and their allies for his service as an advisor, healer, and diviner. The runes affixed to his belt were gifted by other leaders he has helped over his lifetime. Not only are they symbols of respect and appreciation, but each tells the story of Aves’s journey to enlightenment through his good deeds to others.

Battle Type & Team Lineup

PositionCard/LevelMana
SummonerDelwyn Dragonscale5

I decided to forgo my usual Water lineups for this Rebirth battle and opted for a Life Magic lineup. With that, the best Summoner for this would be Delwyn Dragonscale.

PositionCard/LevelMana
1Venari Marksrat3

Cards with Martyr ability are always a huge advantage for Rebirth battles because they can then boost the adjacent cards twice! Venari Marksrat was chosen for this reason as the tank to die twice for the double boost!

PositionCard/LevelMana
2Imperial Knight7

Imperial Knight is a good card for Rebirth battles because it has a huge ton of armor which comes back during Rebirth as well. Having the Void Armor ability also means that even Magic attacks are not spared from going through the ton of armor. This would buy valuable time for the backline to deal damage.

PositionCard/LevelMana
3Djinn Renova7

Djinn Renova is always a must have for Life Magic lineups or in fact any Life lineups where mana allows. The Strengthen ability is a huge boost to the entire team.

PositionCard/LevelMana
4Pelacor Conjurer2

Pelacor Conjurer is one of the best Common Reward cards in the earlier days. With only just 2 mana, its speed and Flying ability makes it very difficult to be hit. It's also the first adjacent card to receive Weapons Training.

PositionCard/LevelMana
5Aves Sturgis6

Aves Sturgis hides in the back, and provides Weapons Training to two adjacent cards. The chances of winning will very much depend on how long these 3 cards stay alive.

PositionCard/LevelMana
6Kra'ar Xoc1

With just 1 mana, you get a solid card with Scavenge ability, which would benefit greatly from the high number of deaths and revivals. Kra'ar Xoc is the second adjacent card to receive Weapons Training. These two cards in my opinion are the best combination in terms of mana efficiency to pair with Aves Sturgis.

  • Pre Battle: Bearing in mind my lineup was purely Level 1, when I saw my opponent's lineup, I knew there was no chance of winning. It was a max Silver lineup dominated by Level 3/4/5 cards! But let's see how many rounds I could withstand.
    image.png
  • Round 1: It was very obvious that the disparity in card levels were causing some troubles for me. I was also faced with Demoralise and Headwinds, which fortunately didn't affect my Magic lineup much. Venari Marksrat went down twice in this round and provided the double boost for Imperial Knight. As you can see, my Magic damage output is actually quite crazy with Pelacor Conjurer and Kra'ar Xoc having 2 Magic damage despite being just 2 mana and 1 mana cards!
    image.png
  • Round 2: It was a lot of huff and puff as I managed to clear my opponent's tank twice as well. Kra'ar Xoc's Scavenge ability was put to the test and it was outlasting all the Sneak attacks thrown at him. Not a bad performance for a Level 1 team so far.
    image.png
  • Round 3: Imperial Knight was the next to go, but with Rebirth, he came back with 8 armor which the opponent had to go through once more. This was the turning point of battle as my opponent cards couldn't hold off my Magic attacks and were dropping like flies.
    image.png
  • Round 4: That 8 armor Imperial Knight did just enough to almost secure this impressive win! Still holding on!
    image.png
  • Round 5: And we have the win in the bag! Kra'ar Xoc finished with 10 HP with that Scavenge ability.

Post Battle

Did my strategy work? Definitely I had to win this by strategy as the level disparity of the cards were so huge. My Life Magic lineup, pairing of Delwyn Dragonscale with Aves Sturgis, making use of Weapons Training, leveraging on Martyr ability for double boost, all came together and allowed this amazing victory to happen. Not sure if my opponent would be shocked though.

What's the Battle Mage Secret? Delwyn Dragonscale is deadly with Aves Sturgis with Pelacor Conjurer and Kra'ar Xoc as adjacent cards.

So that's all I have! What are your takeaways from this battle? Feel free to comment below, as I am always keen to learn and improve!

As always, thanks for reading and have a pleasant day ahead!

Whoa, that's an impressive win. Excellent strategy against a much stronger (more upgraded) opponent. I haven't used either of those legendary soulbound monsters before. I best start incorporating them in my teams..
