Lets Make CHAOS Great Again (A Few Suggestions)

If we take a look at all the "sold out" booster packs from the main sets within the Splinterlands game we will see that each and every set has surpassed their original sale price. The exception to this rule is Chaos Legion which had a price of $5 USD when in print but is currently selling for somewhere south of the $1.25 USD mark on secondary markets. This is likely due to a number of factors. Some such factors (1) CHAOS has a very high print rate compared to previous sets (2) the world-wide economy (3) the general crypto-currency economy. Looking at those three "causes" the easiest one to address seems to be (1) print rate. But how do we "shrink" the supply now that everything is on secondary markets?

Possible Solution(s)

I fully believe that if Splinterlands continues to be a success CHAOS Legion packs reaching to and past their original face value of $5 USD is as close to a guarantee as one can get. I also believe that CHAOS being too affordable on the secondary markets is going to hurt the sale of any future set. My suggestion is for Splinterlands the company to purchase a sizeable amount of CHAOS Legion Packs from the secondary markets to hold for later sale and/or promotional purposes. Purchased in chunks at different points as to get the best bang for their buck. Potential Benefits; (1) CHAOS increases in value (2) helps the sale of the next set (3) Future Profits from the holdings. Another way to get sales moving and CHAOS packs in holders hands is to use some of the Tournament funds to purchase CHAOS packs from the market and put the packs in some one off tournaments. Sure some of those packs won might end up straight back on the market but some will also be opened and held inside players collections. This is a slight twist on the idea that came to light some months back when CHAOS Legion was still in print. Ultimately the original idea never came to fruition because a daily burn of CHAOS packs was put in place instead. I still think the idea has some legs that would benefit the Splinterlands economy as a whole. I also think it would be neat if there was a trade pack feature onsite.

Trade Pack Feature?

  • Trade X CHAOS for X Of the New Edition
  • Trade X UNTAMED for X Of the New Edition
  • Trade X BETA for X Of the New Edtion
  • Trade X ALPHA for X Of the New Edition.

The above would put older assets in the Splinterlands holdings and help move sales along of new sets (which will encourage players to continuously upgrade their collections). These solutions don't burn any booster packs but it does move packs around and creates sales which can (I only assume) lead to a positive result. What do you think of these suggestions? Do you have some of your own. If so lets hear them in the comment section. (What was the original suggestion @rentmoney spoke of earlier?) As mentioned when CHAOS Legion was still in print and a burn wasn't set in place for the packs an idea was floating around for the Splinterlands company to retain a sizeable chunk of CHAOS Packs for future sales and promotions. That (obviously) never came to be and instead we got our daily burn (now completed). Some of my suggestions here are a slight twist on that original idea.

  1. I think land is all that Splinterlands is thinking about right now
  2. While supporting the market of Chaos packs sounds reasonable, Splinterlands would basically be buying back cards at $1.25 that it sold for $5. That is kindly scammy.
  3. Trading for newer editions is interesting. Maybe let players trade them in, then burn the Chaos packs. But burning basically is a loss of revenue for Splinterlands. No new revenue from swap and burn. Swap and hold for later resale maybe.

But hey what do I know. I just like to battle with my cards 🤷

(2) I don't feel as if its scammy. The profits earned from holding the packs can be used for promotional purposes.

(3) Burning would be cool but as you said that is a loss of revenue. I'd prefer SPL holds them. That way they have a supply of past/future editions for profits/promos ect. Who wouldn't want to see some tournaments with out of print boosters as rewards. It might not be too appealing at the moment for CHAOS but another set or two down the road and that appeal likely will be there.

It will take some time, but I think when Land 2.0 is released all the excess cards (and packs) will dry up. The question is, how soon will they rush out Rebellion?

Hopefully there is a decent amount of time between Land 2.0 and Rebellion release.

I can only hope Land 2.0 comes before Rebellion, otherwise it may get ugly.

Right now the way we're seeing it is that a lot of people have stopped playing it because of the low prices, but the way we're also seeing it is that the team is working very hard and many bringing new things like their game plan will come then people will come to it. Those who have backed the project now will benefit greatly as the market starts to move up again with some time left.

I'd love to see the value of CL packs go up but I don't see it happening for a long time and more importantly I don't think the company should have any hand in making that happen.

They are already struggling financially and don't really have the funds to be supporting the secondary market of the packs. The original sale of those packs is their primary revenue source to begin with and if you think about it, they don't really have much of a revenue stream at all. There isn't a whole lot of new money coming into the DEC/SPS/card ecosystem and that is what needs to happen for both the company to continue to exist and for the value of packs to go up.

I don't view it as supporting. I view it as investing in for future profits that can be used for promotional purposes, to build the treasury/DAO and/or any other reason they can think up. Splinterlands invest in stables/park their funds in other currencies anyways so why not their own product that is on sale for nearly 1/5th its face value. Plus I believe CHAOS being too affordable on secondary markets hurts the sale of the future set.

I see where you are coming from and to a degree, I agree. It'll definitely hurt future sales given CL will still be 'modern' for at least another year or so. I do think its something they are just going to have to wait out though. As for treating it like a future investment, I can see the draw here however they are not in the business of investing but of making a game and selling packs. If they were to be investors you would typically see diversification rather than them putting more of their eggs in their own basket.

Now having the DAO purchase packs is a completely different conversation and something I could potentially support.
