The previous season was really short but it was to let the players ready themselves for facing the division between the Wild and Modern versions of Splinterlands.
Personally speaking, I really look forward to the Modern play because I never have really owned the beta and alpha giants which was always a disadvantage for me and although I used to rent a few monsters according to my budget, it did not make much of a difference but I still climbed to Diamond 1 each season for which I am proud of myself.

The previous season, I gave my account to rent golem and within a few days, I realized that I missed playing so much that I pulled back my leveled cards so I could play again.

When playing splinterlands, try to observe a pattern and how much you win at a time and whether you win or lose most in a particular day and perhaps change it so it works for you. Also, if you have time to spare, read the Lore so that you get to know more about the monster you are using. Who knows, a tiny detail could matter.

If you feel you need to climb up, I would advise you to rent cards and do so and reinvest the earnings to buy more cards one at a time. It may seem like an endless investment but it is worth every cent because the Splinterlands is so considerate and they listen to all our opinions and do accordingly within reason.
