The Importance of a Strong Wild Deck in Modern: Outsider Ruleset

Introduction

With the recent introduction of the Outsider ruleset it became more important to have the key wild cards in your Modern deck. In the Outsider ruleset you can now summon one wild unit for your modern battle. And it is important to have almost a full wild deck as you never know which unit becomes very usable in a particular battle. For example I am sharing a battle below where a relatively pedestrian Rare rarity unit Cursed Windeku turned out to be the perfect fit for the team I have assembled.

The Strategy

My strategy for this battle was to use high damage units with splash damage in the middle of my deck and protect them by drawing fire to the taunt units in the back and have a resilient self healing unit upfront.

As my tank I have picked the wild card that I was able to bring in thanks to the Outsider ruleset. This is the six mana rare card from the Chaos Legion Core set: Cursed Windeku. Cursed Windeku is a great mid mana tank, it has the following base specs: four melee damage, eleven health and the speed of three. It also comes with some very useful abilities: Thorns that do damage to the enemy units that attack it with melee, slow to slow down the whole enemy team and Heal ability that restores one third of his health every round.

In the second position I have the first of my three high damage dealers: Dragon Egg Forager. For only five mana this unit does five melee damage and has seven health points and four speed as well as coming with Opportunity and Scavenger abilities.

The opportunity ability is particularly useful here as it allows Dragon Egg Forager to deal damage to the smallest health unit that can be hidden somewhere in the middle of the opponent's lineup. Scavenger ability is also useful as it allows him to grow in health as units get killed on the battle field.

In the third position I have one of my favorite high damage dealers: VEnka the Vile. For only seven mana this neutral legendary unit has seven melee damage and can attack from any position due to her Charge ability and has Piercing ability to penetrate enemy shields as well as Oppress ability that can get quicker through the units with no attack. And finally it can hit multiple times during the same round thanks to her Trample ability.

My third and final damage dealer is potentially the biggest damage dealer: Zyrx the Emberglace. This card has a combination of abilities and specs that can turn it into a real monster damage dealer. The base stats are two magic attack and five melee damage with seven shield and ten health points and four speed for a hefty ten mana.

At the surface this doesn't look that impressive, but combine this with a splash damage from our summoner and bloodlust ability as well as Execute ability and this thing can become absolutely deadly!

In the fifth and six positions I have my two taunt monsters: Bellowmancer and Syrenth. These two are very resilient and their main purpose is to hold off the enemy attacks as long as possible and let the high damage dealers do the main work.

In this battle I am up against a much higher ranked opponent ZaWarrior from the Guild of @neoxian

In the first round ZaWarrior unleashed some serious firepower and was able to take out the first of my two taunt monsters the very resilient Bellowmancer. But my team was no slouch either with Zyrx getting a kill in the first round and Dragon Egg Forager taking out a dangerous damage dealer in the back of ZaWarrior lineup.

And the second round was a classis showcase of the extreme damage power from Zyrx and Venka! These two got rid of the rest of the ZaWarrior team in the second round!

Important win against a significantly higher ranked opponent in the Modern Champion League!
