Shauner's 20th Splinterlands Brawl Report - PIZZA 2 The Deep Dish Guild - Dec. 12, 2021

Welcome to my 20th #BrawlReport as part of the @hive.pizza PIZZA 2 The Deep Dish guild!

I was a little late in signing up for a fray this time, so I ended up Fray #10 which is a Silver-league Untamed only fray. I don't have high hopes for this one as I will only have level 1 rented Untamed cards for this event. Let's have a look and see how we did!

Congratulations to @cryptoniusraptor for trying with me for 1st place! I was shocked to perform so well in this Silver-league Untamed fray, but it appeared my opponents were not using higher level cards either so it simply came down to strategy. I am still hoping to achieve an undefeated brawl one of these days too!

PIZZA 2 The Deep Dish Results

We finished in 5th place in this brawl, which is a bit lower than we are used to. However, we were also up against three top-100 guilds in this brawl and that presented quite a challenge for many of us. For our 5th place finish, we received 9 Crowns and 415 Merits each.

My Battles

Battle 1 - Win

Weak Magic: Attacks hit armor before reducing health.
Keep Your Distance: Monsters with melee attack may not be used in battles.

While we both have a Krash Wanderford gladiator tank, my opponent has a Gold Foil version as well as some level 4 and 5 cards in play. I am using all level 1 cards, but have a Yodin summoner that should provide me with the extra boost I need to prevail.

In this case, the tank provided enough blocking to allow my back row of range attack monsters to use the blast ability to clear out my opponent.

Battle 2 - Win

Lost Magic: Monsters with magic attack may not be used in battles.

With magic attack not being allowed, I wasn't able to use the Llama/Kron combo, but still wanted to utilize the +2 health and Last Stand ability the Llama provides. I decided to pair that with the Katrelba Gobson gladiator. My thinking is that the gladiator will be the last card standing and will have built up its stats from the bloodlust ability and the Last Stand will make it tough to overcome.

Tha gladiator has Double Strike, which came in handy while wearing down the shields of their tank. My plan worked perfectly and the gladiator was the last one standing and the boost it got from Llama made it unstoppable. My opponent had all higher level cards, but succumbed to this combination of attack.

Battle 3 - Win

Opponent Fled.

Battle 4 - Win

Equal Opportunity: All monsters have the Opportunity ability.
Stampede: The Trample ability can trigger multiple times per attack if the trampled monster is killed.

While I didn't get to us Llama/Kron in the last battle, I did get to this time. In addition, I added the Palidon Rakk gladiator, which has a monstrous 12 health and the bloodlust ability that could make that even higher.

Because of the Equal Opportunity ability for this battle, my melee attackers were able to attack from any position and this meant my gladiator card was busy killing my opponent's cards and building up its powers while sheltered behind my tank.

Battle 5 - Win

Equal Opportunity: All monsters have the Opportunity ability.
Holy Protection: All monsters have the Divine Shield ability.

These 99-mana battles are always fun and with the Equal Opportunity ability, should be especially interesting. I deployed Llama/Kron with the same Palidon Rakk gladiator I used in the last battle. These were supplemented with other melee attack monsters to take advantage of the Opportunity ability.

Unfortunately, my gladiator was not making any death blows so his stats didn't get a boost from the bloodlust ability before he ended up in the first position. However, the combination of the gladiator tank and the Kron as a backup took out the remaining monsters despite its Last Stand boost from my opponent's Llama summoner.

Battle 6 - Loss

Fog of War: Monsters lose the Sneak and Snipe abilities.
Heavy Hitters: All monsters have the Knock Out ability.

I was really optimistic heading into my final battle and was hoping for an undefeated streak. We both used the Yodin summoner and my opponent had a couple of higher level monsters in play.

Chimney Wallstop has been great as a 2nd position monster that I've used successfully numerous times in the past. I think the issue I ran into here is that the Blast ability is most effective against an opponent with many cards in play, but this opponent only used a Magnor tank and one backup card. While the backup card was taken out quickly, the blast ability became useless very quickly and left me at a disadvantage.

However, the only reason I suffered a loss here was because I had two consecutive misses in the last two rounds. Had those both hit, I would have prevailed. The misses are something I need to work on understanding better as they always seem to happen at the worst possible time.

Something new I am adding to my Brawl Report is sending the new Splinterlands Battle Token (SBT) to opponents of mine who had a great battle. In this brawl, that award goes to @IBU1987 for their performance in this final battle of mine. Unfortunately, this Splinterlands player doesn't seem to have an active Hive account so I'm unable to send the tokens.

Final Thoughts

I was really hopeful I'd have an undefeated brawl this time and it came down to two misses in the final round that made that not happen. However, the fact that I was in a Silver-league fray and up against three Top-100 guilds, I'd say this was one of my most successful brawl performances yet.
