Drawing Fire Elemental in my style for Splinterlands Art Contest!
SPLINTERLANDS ART CONTEST
What's up guys, I hope everyone is having a great day. This week I decided to draw Fire Elemental as my entry for the Splinterlands art contest. I made some changes to the character to suit my style. Here she is and I hope you guys enjoy the blog!
FIRE ELEMENTAL
THE PROCESS...
THE RESULT
SHORT EXPLANATION
I was looking for a pose that's like a charging pose but in a different perspective so I scrolled through some posts on deviant art and found this pose reference. This was just what I was looking for and I started the rough sketch in a notebook. I played around with the flaming hair design a little bit here since it's the part I like the most about this character. I tested some wavy strokes and eventually came up with a good design and decided to start the painting process.
Since she is a being made out of fire I thought it was best to keep the skin tone with warm colours because this will also be very useful when. I start to paint her flaming hair. I used airbrush to create a gradient stroke on top of the head where the glow is going to be more prominent in the final output. This made me confused a bit XD but I learnt another trick when there is trouble painting multiple shades at the same time. The trick is to paint on a multiply layer with grayscale shades. This is the easiest method I found so far and it works so well. Gotta say my thanks to samdoesarts for this one. This technique is very useful while painting.
I kept the same flaming colour palette for the eyes as well since it goes really well with the overall design. I just added some shadows under the eyes and highlights on the eyes and that was pretty much it. In the original design, she was wearing flaming clothes but I decided to ditch that and painted a sleeveless version of it because I planned on making a flaming background so too many flames will ruin the whole painting so I skipped it.
When it comes to beings with the energy it's always best to keep an aura around them to make it look even cooler so I duplicated the base layer and turned on the blending mode to Add and applied gaussian blur on it and duplicated this layer again to get a more visible glow effect around her.
The final step was to paint the background and I decided to paint some flames and sparks around her here. After I was done with it I decided to use liquify tool to twirl the flames towards her making her the focus point. That's about it guys. Thanks for reading and I hope you guys enjoyed the process!
(Off-topic: I managed to upload a high-resolution image this time as the output. The trick is to keep the image size under 5MB. That explains why my wip shots are in higher quality compared to the final result since it was always high in size compared to others.)
Tools used: Ibis paint x, pencil and notebook.
Duration: 8hrs
