Splinterlands Art Contest

Hello and welcome back to my new blog!

Honestly, guys, I wasn't gonna participate this week. I was getting sick continuously for the past two weeks. I wasn't really in the right mind to draw anything. I did try to draw some but none of them was good. All of them had some sort of anatomy issues which made me more annoyed. Two days ago I visited a new doctor and it looks like the medicines are working so I started drawing yesterday and It turned out pretty good.

I selected River Nymph to draw this time, an official design. All the drawings I made so far had a human colour palette. I wanted to try something different this time and River Nymph was perfect for it since her skin, hair and eyes were all blue in different shades.

This drawing was my 5th attempt to create art for this week XD. I'm glad that I was able to finish it. Before painting, I watched some YouTube videos of people painting. I don't know why but it always gives me the motivation and energy to draw one for myself.

As usual, I started with the skin. I was a bit overwhelmed because it was blue this time so I have to adjust the shadows and lighting to this colour. Usually, when I draw the nose, I paint the lower end of the nose reddish-orange but now I can't do that and had to rely only on blue shades. It did work out though so I'm happy with the results.

I did something different with the eyes this time. Usually, I just add highlights under the pupil and shadows above and that works well but I wanted to go for a bit more realistic approach this time. I used penfade on add layer to create that overlapping strokes of light on the iris. The next step was to blend the edges with the white part of the eye and that was it. Of course, I added the highlights as well haha. Without it, the eyes won't be shiny. The head is very important to me because if it looks ugly then I won't move forward haha. When it looks good it gives me confidence that the painting is worth finishing.

As for the hair, I did something different as well. I applied a technique I saw on some viral YouTube shorts. I don't usually add this many strokes to the hair but I decided to test this new technique anyway and this was the result. She also had a muted yellowish crown on her head but the official design doesn't seem to suit my style so I decided to make a new one for her. I did make it look more metallic in the early stages but because of the background, I decided to make it white so that the glow can be applied.

The final stage was creating the background. This was tough. I tested many background designs and this was the one I liked the most. There were too many WIP shots. I didn't want to add all that in here. The idea for the background was a nymph sitting near the banks of the river around some plants. Sounds easy, right? But it was far from the truth XD. The easy part was drawing some bushes in complementary to the blue nymph hence I chose magenta. The plain background was a gradient mix of blue and magenta as well. After adding some highlights on the water and shadows on top to create the distance the background was completed. The final step was to add some splash of water near the river banks to create a more realistic effect. I was very satisfied with the background this time. It looks very good with the character design because of the complimentary factor in it.

I hope you guys like it so I'll see you guys in my next blog :)

I'm inspired by samdoesart. I love his style. When I started this style I used to study alot from his channel. Too bad most of the good stuff is only available in his patreon XD.

Thanks hanzzzz...😀 but I still has a long way to go hehe.

It's a bit different from Samdoesart? Cuz I follow that too and although the palette is vibrant and pretty close, there's a lot of you and it's cool

Yes I hope it's different XD. I don't want people saying that my work is a copy of his haha. I only take some inspirations from him that's all. That guy knows how to draw cute girls really well. His lineart has that 'flow' while drawing anatomy. I'm trying to understand how to works. I'm pretty sure he explains that in his patreon. Well it sucks to be poor sometimes 🤪.

I say... There's reddit for that 🤣🤣🤣 or maybe some underground tumblrs that offer to share links. Cuz I remember doing that for peterhan style before when I was still learning ink sketching.
What I'm trying to get from him is the lighting tbh. Also trying to follow phillipsuearts cuz I need to learn how to digitally draw environments and not make it look flat?

Dang I follow Philip too XD. It's too bad he only shares his mountain texture brush in patreon.

Yes, Sam's portraits has excellent lighting. He always choose references which are well lit. Dude really mastered colour theory.

I think you can just custom brushes if you have cps or like... Get a rough oil or acrylic brush and modify brush properties on some apps. I tried that in medibang. It works sometimes

This is a sign to learn color theory, boi
And I need to review mine

Ibis have option to import 3rd party brushes but I did search for it online but didn't found any like that.

I don't really know how to play with the brush settings on Ibis. There is too much of that and it's confusing lolz.

As for colour theory I have some understanding of it now. We can't really compare our skills with people like sam who went to art school most of his life. They are groomed to be that way plus I don't even have the gear lolz. It's very hard for me to draw and paint hair. Sometimes I don't get that natural strokes with fingers. It's annoying XD.

Didn't know ibis could do that. That's pretty interesting UwU I still haven't learned ibis properly ughhh. I'll try looking into brush customization when I have time. Maybe I can find something there with more texture

Well true. But practice can still take you a step forward since art school is just a guide. Repetition makes the artist, not the classes or the school background. But you definitely need to look into getting tools soon

Yes repetition and practice does make great improvements over time. It's just that I don't have much base with art lolz. I study with the bread crumbs they leave in their YouTube channels. Everyone seems to be moving towards patreon to monetize. Their YouTube videos have only like 1% useful content these days. The rest are only available on patreon and I kinda need that to improve XD.

I did have you the blending brush for Ibis though. I thought you know about the import option. The only thing I dislike about Ibis is that the lineart cracks even when the canvas is at 3k resolution XD. Their anti aliasing is not that great.

Another stunner 😗🤌. I really like how you did the water. And her tiara is a great match with the complimentary orange gem!

Everyone seems to be liking the background haha. It was freaking hard lolz. Well now i know how to do it so it wouldn't be hard next time hehe.

It was a redesigned tiara. I didn't like the colour on the old one so I made this instead.

Thanks Ema 🤩.

Thanks jiji. The background was an experiment and I'm glad that it worked. It was the hardest part XD. I wasted too much time thinking about the background haha.

That's good. Take advantage of that rush hehe. I used to feel that last month. I made like 4 artworks in one week XD. After that it was a struggle haha.

After making a Splinterlands post make sure you post your post link under their latest compilation post. This is very important. You can also use some of the tags they use in their compilation post.

Hahahaha!!! That's true!! Dangg~ that's a lot ohhh I used to do that too~~ and the consequence is 100x more worst hahaha

Oh, I am a little bit confused are they going to give what concept to draw or it is up to you?

You can either draw an OC or their character but if you are drawing OC you should also write a short character information (check my second last blog) about them to connect them to the game. If you are drawing their official characters then you can skip the above step.

It's upto us to decide which character to draw. You can find the cards in this site
