I had bought some alpha packs when steemmonsters came out but never "felt" too much for the graphics ... so I just let them gather dust ... until recently ...
So a few days ago I decided to dust-off my Alpha cards (not too many) and learn how to play Splinterlands and play a game or two. It's pretty fun I think and I'd like to progress beyond "Bronze III" but ... I'm totally puzzled !
This is nothing like the games I've been used to. I mean, I used to play Magic: The Gathering back in 1995 -1997 ... So how on Earth does one buy cards ! I went on Splinterlands. com, everything seems to be "sold out"! I then tried on the secondary market where prices are quoted in USD but in reality one needs "DEC" or the even more mysterious to me "CP" to pay ! WTF ? Then I thought I'd go to Hive engine and swap hive for DEC but it looked like DEC was on BSC, Eth and some other chain but not on Hive / HE ?
Anyone cares to give me hand here ? I feel lost!

The cards in packs come in releases and have been sold out. Today was the first opening for the new set of "Chaos Legion" but it was only for the presale. There is about a month left before the open sale, unless wanting to buy some "vouchers" from Hive Engine and buying packs through the game with those.
The packs are predicted to go fast though, so be ready.
As for the chains, Splinterlands connects up to quite a few now - but it is possible in game to buy credits (can use these to buy packs when available) with HIVE or HBD directly. The "CP" are the collection points of each card and this is used to determine which leagues people can play. More CP, the higher the potential league - but the cards still matter of course, to win.
Thanks for the answer ... although I don't quite know what to make of it ... so I should go to Hive engine and buy "credits" ... which token is that ... I see DEC, SPS, Vouchers, CHAOS, XCHAOS ... I'm still lost ... what tokens should I buy and how do I use those tokens afterwards to get some cards ? Is there a "Splinterlands for dummies" post somewhere around ?
THere are different assets as well as "user created ones" for different reasons.

I understand and appreciate your patience. Many things are obvious to us, but not that easy for a new comer. It would really help me if you can formulate your main questions as a few bullets. I recommend you make a post. That way it will be easier for your to track.

Thanks for the offer. I've advanced meanwhile. I bought 6 VOUCHERs on Tribaldex. Yet Splinterlands doesn't see them. It says my VOUCHER balance is 0.148 (coming from staking some SPS). I'm scratching my head as to what to do ...
you have to move them in game.
Click on the shop button first, then click on the send button next to vouchers owned below, should be 0.14 for you.
When you click that will generate the following pop-up
You click on hive engine, and then enter 6 in the box above (as you have 6 vouchers at hive engine), and then click transfer in.
That way, your vouchers will be moved in-game.
Oh my God, thank you, that is AWFULLY counterintuitive ! My balance was 0.183 VOUCHER (earned from staked SPS) so for me "SEND" meant sending those 0.183 VOUCHER somewhere else ... Once you click "send" then you get to see that there's "Transfer IN" and "Transfer OUT" ... Who has come up with this UI/UX, I wonder ?

Thanks for clarifying the VOUCHER mechanism, I bought 6 packs and I also bought 25 legendary potions. I would like to use them in order to increase the chance of getting legendary cards when opening the 6 packs.
Didn't want to do anything rash, would you please be so kind and tell me whether I can click on "open multiple" (and I'll get a chance to say that I want to apply the legenday potions)? Or should I do something prior to "open multiple"?

Yes, you can click multiple.
If you have potions in account they will all be used automatically. 6 packs will require 6*5 = 30 potions

Ok so if I get it right: if I want to buy cards (Chaos Legions packs appear to be the only available option right now), I need 2 (TWO) things:
I can buy CREDITs there, thank you very much, had not noticed that. Cool. Now about VOUCHERs ... I get them by staking SPS, right ? Oh my God, this is complicated ... but it's only the beginning because ... how do I buy SPS (to stake) ??? I clicked up there and I am told SPS is sold on pancakeswap and gate.io ... I have never used any of these exchanges ...
Am I right that in order to buy cards I need

It varies in complexity, based on what you have to spend.
To move from USDT to SPS, I'd suggest sushiswap
When you have SPS, you can swap some of that into SWAP.HIVE, then into VOUCHERs.

I have HIVE, I can thus get SWAP.HIVE. Do you recommend that I acquire VOUCHERs on Hive Engine ? I could get VOUCHERs there and credits directly on Splinterlands.com. Given he last price for VOUCHERs ($13) it would be ~ $17 for a pack of cards, does that sound right ?

Happy to help, mate. Yes that would work. You just go to tribaldex.com, hit the 'Deposit' button and deposit your Hive. It'll then be SWAP.HIVE, which you can use to buy vouchers and/or SPS.
Tribaldex is the newer version of Hive Engine. Same information, but cleaner interface. Hive Engine will be retired before long.
