CELESTIAL HARPY

Good day @splinterlands community! How's your day? Today I'll gonna show you how to draw a feathery character (Celestial Harpy) which is one of the rare cards from Splinterlands. This life card is one of the favorite cards of the newbies because of its low mana cost (2). But what makes it special? Its chaos legion edition and the following abilities: flying opportunity and true strike. Now let's start the art creation!

The Card Used as Inspiration and its Lore

  • Lore

The harpies of the Celestial Clan are called as such because they dwell on the highest peaks of the mountains across the Splinterlands and prefer peace over violence. Their feathers are the blue and white colors of the sky, making them hard to see for anyone on the ground. They sing beautiful melodies that can sometimes be heard on a gentle spring breeze. Living in peaceful clans, the harpies remain to themselves and immerse in a world of beauty, art, and freedom.

Because of their beautiful plumage and the mystical stories told about them, hunters come. They journey far up the mountains, seeking to kill a harpy for coin and glory. But any hunter that makes it that high never comes back. For the Celestial Clan works as a team to defend one another. And they do not show mercy to those who have darkness in their heart.

The Process

All Steps in 6 Phases

Phase 1

I started by having a fine sketch that allows me to imagine how to color and characterize the entire body. But what I truly envisioned is the feathery image as its main asset being a harpy. Thin and thick lines are used to have that precised sketch.

Phase 2

I make sure that I got the correct skin tone for a harpy. Like a pinkish one that we can see through bird's skin. However it depends upon the species of bird. So I just follow what the reference looks like. Then switch to red range and pick the lower area for a pinkish tone.

Phase 3

Now the focus is the main base of the art. The feathers of the characters. I choose the blue. Not too dark and not too light. Just a blue which is balanced. All the feathers are colored with the same hue. It is to emphasize the base and how it will be used for the other designs.

Phase 4

The final character has been polished in this stage. Everything from the head, eyes, skin, feather, and even the intricate patterns all over the character's body. Well, the strategy for the feathers are the multiple application of colors with different lowered opacities. I just focus from the ranges of blue and white. A small amount of grey and yellow. The pens used are varied. Faded and the one which is more visible.

Phase 5

The background was made by applying a grey color. Then painted with faded white to make it cloudy. Then on the upper right is a sun. The rays are made by using an eraser feature that lowered in opacity.

Phase 6

Finally, the main character and background is integrated well. It complements nicely. Isn't it?
