Getting Back Into Modern

Last season was especially tough for me as modern players were rampantly using battle helpers. I lost maybe 7 out of 10 battles that I was in. It was so discouraging that I decided to take a break from ranked battles and guild brawls until things got resolved.

And sure enough, after the last game update, a revised Splinterlands terms and conditions was released. And if you look closely at the Ownership/Restriction part, it states:

"(xiii) use any automated-player, spider, algorithmic card selection/suggestion services, site search/retrieval application, or other device to retrieve or index any portion of the App or the content posted on the App, or to collect information about its users and gameplay for any unauthorized purpose"

In my own interpretation, this means the game is restricting the usage of not only bots but battle helpers as it falls under the "algorithmic card selection/suggestion" part of the terms. And I don't know what methods will be used in order to enforce these measures but I'm already starting to see player accounts being banned.

This was a very positive news especially for players like me that plays casually and tries to play with as minimal cost as possible. You can see my el cheapo silver modern deck that I've been using for months now here.

I've mentioned this before in my previous post that this deck was primarily capitalizing on the Llama-Kron combination with a few support cards. I also shift mostly to Life and Water lineups whenever Earth is not available in the selection.

I had to start in Bronze I this season and I was already finding good success. Even though my staked SPS was just at 3,000 SPS, I am getting an average of 0.5 SPS per win.

And since renting in the Bronze level is significantly cheaper than Silver, staying in Bronze might also be an option I can consider. I'm also having good luck with my first few matches.

I'm currently in the Bronze league so I decided to feature my second match for the season which is an interesting mirror battle between two Ilthaine summoners. You can check out the link here.

It is a 31-mana Bronze league match with the Lost Magic rule set. And since magic is not available, I naturally went for Ilthaine in order to take advantage of the Return Fire ability. I used Pelacor Conjurer for tank with Corsair Bosun as backup. I decided to utilize range monsters for support fire while my enemy completely avoided using range and went for sneak attackers.

And once again, I am highlighting Zyriel as she can turn two zero-attack support monsters into damage dealers as well. I have Scavo Hireling which can provide armor repair for Corsair Bosun as well as Clockwork Aide which provides a speed buff.

I was expecting Pelacor Conjurer to stay in the battle a bit longer by dodging a few enemy attacks. Unfortunately, the enemy Drybone Barbarian triggered his Enrage mode early and hit a devasting 8-damage blow to Conjurer. My Zyriel took revenge and killed Drybone right after, leaving a face-off between the two Corsair Bosuns.

And while I might seem like at a disadvantage due to the sneak attacks, having extra armor on my units made them survive longer than anticipated.

Corsair Bosun and Zyriel managed to best the enemy tank and expose the weaker backline monsters into the front. This made the battle in my favor and turned it into a win.
