Dying Trying

avatar

I am trying - I am TRYING!!!

So close to getting into Champion 2, but it is a mammoth struggle. I have again played one zillion games so far this season and I am within one half decent win away from getting there, but it is so elusive - I got within 19 points - but can't get it over that hurdle...

FUCK

image.png

It is pretty frustrating - but at the same time, being on the edge is a far more exciting than just submitting and remaining comfortable where I am.

back to 75 points to get...

Perhaps I should take a break as after all, it has been a pretty long workday lead into this, but it is soooo close!! :D

A couple more rounds and if I don't make it through by that - I will have a break and decide if I want to continue, or stay put.

Today in several conversations, the idea of building an environment for success came up and as I was discussing it with one of my clients, they said,

"I get more work done from home."

This is common.

And it should scare the bejeezus out of employers, because what it means is that what they are providing their employees, isn't conducive to getting the best out of their employees - they haven't built their environment well. And, because people are remote, this means that they become less emotionally attached and therefore less loyal to their employer, which is a big part of the reason that so many people are changing work now too.

But, designing workspace for optimal performance is an interesting thing to consider, as it is like making sure the gym has the right equipment to exercise the muscles in the right way for performing a sport or, making sure a kitchen is organized for practical usage and doesn't just look nice.

Don't get me wrong - I am not feeling sorry for companies here, as it is a clear sign that what they have been offering so far, is sub par, yet keep expecting their employees to perform. For example, it is common that a company will say something like,

"we want 10% growth in profits per year."

Which means that in less than 7.5 years the profits will have doubled. However, the rewards for delivering that profit hasn't doubled for most people, has it? How many people get a 10% payrise a year, even when the company is profiting like that?

Obviously though, this has another consideration there, as profit isn't guaranteed, but salaries are. Most salaries at least aren't flexible and once a payrise has been given, it doesn't get rolled-back. This means that when the leaner years inevitably come, the salary is creep is no longer sustainable. However, there are ways around this too, where instead of paying the 10% in increased pay, it comes in the form of one-off bonuses and stock options. This is common, but it isn't common for all employees - but should be. If there are stock options for the leadership and executives, there can be stock options for the employees too, giving the same percentage relative to salary.

This gives employees ownership in the company they work for and therefore, also gives them a higher chance of building loyalty to the brand itself. However, this has issues too for management, for as you can imagine in most companies, the average employees outnumber the executives getting stock options heavily - which means within a relatively short time, the employees as an inveted force have a massive amount of sway, so instead of dealing with unions to negotiate better terms, the companies would have to negotiate with their employees who are also investors - this means that they are both trying to negotiate a better deal for the company side, but also have to keep shareholders happy.

This is actually quite a lot like how Splinterlands works, isn't it?

I am a player and an investor and if "they don't keep me happy" I will stop playing (which is bad for the game) and I will sell (which is bad for the value). This means that they have to keep developing the game to satisfy my entertainment needs and building an economy that I am able to get an adequate return on my investment. If they get "too greedy" - I leave.

I am am using the proverbial "I" here, but this extrapolates out to the tens of thousands of players, where if they move as predominantly one, they can make or break the entire ecosystem - pushing it to new ATHs or, to zero.

In my opinion, this is a far healthier business model than businesses with a narrow investor pool that they are answerable to, because it means that the growth of the company is tied to the success of the "employees" -where the employees are the players and investors. This means that what is in the best interest of the game, is also in the best interest of the users - unlike how most businesses operate and treat their employees.

It is about profit sharing, but in order to really "profit" as a user, investment is also required and those who invest the most, stand to gain the most. However, those who are invested, are also the most loyal, active and engaged stakeholders, giving stability, strength and potential to the business itself.

As said, all businesses should start considering with a lot more thought what it means to build an environment of success for their entire stakeholder group, otherwise people will disengage and find somewhere more compelling and rewarding to spend their time.

146 points away...

I got hammered.

I will try again later for one last attempt to get over that hill and into greener pastures.

I also prefer to be under pressure and on the edge in a game or any situation to bring out all my potential.
I wish business owners had relationships of respect and kindness with people, we would get great results. Unfortunately, the concept of capitalism has moved from countries to people as well in their dealings

Capitalism isn't the problem alone - I think the bigger issue is unrestrained greed and the incentive to always get more.

There's going to be a lot of freelancers and passive income earners in the coming years, especially with numerous opportunities to stake crypto to earn passively. Imagine staking $2m worth of HBD, that's $420K per year of compounding. Most people are just working to get that nest egg and so the whole loyalty to employees goes down the drain.

I mean, when you think about it technically, the employees are the employees own version of staking and earning from their investment.

Whenever Splinterlands frustrates me, what I do is get very close to my target and then take a couple hours break. For example, when you're 15 points away from Champions 2, just stop there and come back after two hours.

Would be interesting if people were buying that volume of HBD - would the peg hold? ;D

Yeah - taking the break mean more people can pass by, making the competition a little easier - I should do it more, but this season I have decided to play a lot :)

I am definitely someone who gets more work done in my office. It is kind of my sanctuary. When I am at home I have too many other things pulling me away from my work. My focus is split and I don't find it as productive. That doesn't necessarily mean my quality of life is any better though. It was kind of nice when we were in lock down being able to take a walk with my wife each morning and have lunch with her each day. I will be lucky if I make it into Diamond III this season. Competition is tough. We need rental prices to go back up so I can just do that!

Yeah, I get distracted too.

It was kind of nice when we were in lock down being able to take a walk with my wife each morning and have lunch with her each day.

I can count on one hand the amount of times the schedules have allowed for lunch together in two years. It is awesome you have been able to manage it!

Rents will change for EOS :)

It is tougher when not being able to see who is going to battle- at least for me.

The end of this season actually crept up on me a little. I can't believe there is less than two days left.

Yeah it tends to do that. I am not playing until the last half - so it goes so fast!

...because people are remote, this means that they become less emotionally attached and therefore less loyal to their employer...

For this reason, my company implies rotational shift working to not lose the organizational culture. I don't know what will happen for remote working in the future, but I hope companies will not lose this two years accumulation of remote working.

It is going to be interesting for many companies that didn't have it prior to Covid. The company I work for has people who have been remote for many years already :)

My company is conservative. It is likely that they will terminate remote working.

Trying is the best thing to do with anything, with life. Failure is the key to success and we should keep trying to get succeed in anything. Sometimes i listen to Linkin Park, " I tried so hard and got so far, in the end it doesn’t even matter." It’s true sometime. It has a very deep meaning.

You are right - it doesn't really matter about the outcome most of the time at least - but trying isn't always easy.

I'm excited to get up to a level where I'll be challenged to progress, I'm making the move to gold within the next two months if I can get some funds together and I feel like that would be a great challenge

It is fun to push into the next level I think - no point just being content in a game :)

Everything in this old world goes back to money. Many employees are disposable. That being said, the company will too often choose not to invest in their workforce. Yet, if they only know that a well appreciated team member will produce more. The big question is if the employee's extra output from having those extra benefits actually produce more for the company. In other words is treating people like people instead of machines cost effective? Sad to think that employers are even having to ponder how to treat their workforce... but it is the era we live in.

I think it is cost effective in some industries at least - I know that the effort my team puts into onboarding sales people is expensive - but it has also cut down their ramp up time by 50% getting them closing deals faster. These people are already very experienced salespeople - but it still has a profound effect - plus, they become part of the community too.

I find playing at different times of day has a massive difference in the level. I know champion level is a different ball game but I feel it's like playing poker online in Europe. Play early in the evening before the Americans start playing.

It does - for me - the golden hours are between 12 and 3am though...

I am completely off the rail this season. I am not even in D1 yet LOL!!

I will do a push tonight, but I think I am too late and I am toast this season. Too much going on at work!

The new kind of investor-employer-product relationship crypto brings is exactly what would show employers just how much they need to really offer to get skilled hands in the future

They are going to have to offer much more than they are, that is for sure.

So close to getting into Champion 2, but it is a mammoth struggle. — I bet you won’t stop trying .

Before the covid pandemic , working remotely has always been a thing even though might not be rampant because most organizations tend to be conservative. However , working remotely or not does not actually determine the output of an employee rather I feel it’s a conducive , enabling and good working environment that will actually boost an employee’s morale to bring forth greater outputs for overall success in an organization.

Giving an employee a sense of ownership as an investor in an organization is more or less a brilliant tactic to foster high yield productivity no doubt.

I think that giving ownership should be a norm - but how many will?

The way I see it, people like me who don't like 9 to 5 jobs are covered with remote jobs. I'm more productive remotely that when I have to report to a building every single day!

It gets boring😑

I work mostly remote at the moment, but it instead of 9-5, it is 8 til 7 :D

For me, Longer hours remotely is still less stressful than the same number of hours in a specific building where you probably drive to and fro every day.

The going and coming back adds to the stress, sometimes traffic contributes too.

Hopefully you got it! I managed to squeak in there last night, good luck!

Now that I think of it, I might have contributed to your madness. I'm pretty sure I beat you twice yesterday :X

No!!

I was within 20 points 3 times!!
But some ass called xsuil-something kept beating me
:D

One thing I noticed this season is that Zaku has made a strong return and I don't play with one. Perhaps next season I will have to rent one. I am far from using a full deck and since my mental deck is even more sketchy, it is a challenge.

Fun though.

I gave up my rentals last night, but was playing today for the fun, even though I knew I was going to get hammered. Close to C2 is no better than close to dropping from C3 :)

Brother, I was trying really hard not to rent one since they were going for like 399 DEC/day. But I got frustrated, rented one, and I guess you got the wrong end of a pissed off Zaku. Zaku is a must in any Champ + deck, rented or owned. He just auto wins you some battles. After that its whoever has the higher speed boosts.

Yeah, I will have to bite the bullet - I just don't like playing it! I like beating it though. I lost pretty much every "lose abilities" rounds because of no zaku though.

This season has been so weird! And so challenging. I've had my ass handed to me much more than usual. Also, we met about 5x more than we ever have in a typical season, what was up with that?? and those fights were super fun and challenging. I lost count of who was up, and I didn't care by the end 😂

Sure hope you make it to c2, I'm glad I managed it so my heart rate can settle out for a little while!

Also, we met about 5x more than we ever have in a typical season, what was up with that?

And I think I only won 1 of them! :D

It was fun though and I think it is part of the "problem" that made the season weird - we don't see who we are facing before the battle, which means you can't predict what they will play or know when to take some risks to do a daily quest.

I didn't make it to C2 - three times I was within 20 points - got knocked back to 200 points 3x - gave up after the 4th climb got me to within 30 points and knocked back again!

Nooooo you won more than that. For sure.

I honestly hadn't given any thought to the masked opponents but I think you're on to something. Knowing the name and the person's patterns let you have a leg up. Sometimes :D

Haha although it's a fun setup. One match I put my team together, felt confident, and then BUBKE came up as my opponent and I went, "oh!! oh shit!!!"

Oh man, that's awful. I usually have that trouble breaking into c1, and then often a couple hundred points out from d1 and from c2. Odd, but I'll hang out in the same 100/150 points for days. But that's heartbreaking, being so close and then having to make up 200 points.

Knowing the name and the person's patterns let you have a leg up

At least you could know if it is a bot or a real player and, if they are likely to have a full deck or missing cards.

I have beaten Bubke once! But not this season :)
He is a nice guy btw - met him a few years back in Poland

But that's heartbreaking, being so close and then having to make up 200 points.

The hard part was that it wasn't even third or fourth time lucky!! One average win and I would have been home home!

Oh that's true, I never thought about bots and full decks. Sometimes I can guess if they are bots by card placements, but on the whole I'm clueless!

That's awesome about Bubke! I'm looking forward to meeting Splinterlands players someday. I bet it's a trip.

I think my first time ever breaking into Champion I struggled for days trying to cross the 3700 threshold. It was maddening. I know that pain 😂
18 hours left though - you up for a fifth try???
