Tournament or Tourniquet

avatar

It must have been a year ago that I entered my first Splinterlands tournament and after all this time I have made it to the massive milestone of entering my second.

image.png

It is the League of Champions event and at one point, I had to take a screenshot in the first round, because it is unlikely to ever happen again. I missed the next shot where it was 8 wins and 0 losses,

image.png

But I ended up finishing round one in 24th, after losing my last three matches. Damn, it doesn't take much to fall a long way down!

image.png

The first 37 places out of 125 entrants progressed, so I made it through to the second round, for the first time ever - which also gives me a 50% strike rate, which is not too bad.

And, I wanted to show this round, because it is not only pretty good, but @xsuilx absolutely schooled me yesterday and was kind enough to let me know in chat, while I was still watching the battle!!

And the battle where I was decimated yesterday is a great example of the power of Rathe and also a brilliant example of how wrong I get some lineups. It was a shambles. Still, even if I had chosen better, I don't think I would have put together something to defend against that in the blind.

Round two started a couple hours ago, and I have recently just entered all of my teams. I don't think this round is going to be as successful as the last and just for some fun, I have to play @bubke twice. I have played against him several times during the open seasons, I think I have managed two wins in total. Definitely not a 50% strike rate there.

But, isn't this incredible?

So far, Splinterlands tournaments have distributed over six million in prize money (crypto, not "real" money), which is amazing. And remember, that is at the time of event creation, not necessarily what it is actually worth today, as there are ups and down, but there have been plenty of downs over the last years also - more so than ups. But, while the down times are long, the up times are strong, so I would imagine that much of that prize value is worth more now, especially since a lot of it probably went back into Splinterlands assets.

And, that is where the real value is - the assets that people own.

I had a funny thought whilst pulling apart the old kitchen with one of our part-time helpers. He was cutting some masonite boards to protect the floors with a cordless circular saw and I had the feeling of I would like one of those too. But, the weird thing was that my feelings went through the process of like when I am beaten by a particular card, where I feel I need one, then go to the market to check the price - normally not purchasing it, as this happens a lot.

It is the "tool" of it that is interesting with this investment, as I do the same thing with the tools I have, still not liking to borrow from neighbors unless I must, I tend to want to own. And then, when I look to buy, I want to get it at a deal and of course, I want something decent. I am far more patient buying the tools I need for the house than the cards I need to play Splinterlands - but isn't that insane?

A half-decent DeWalt cordless circular saw is under 300€

image.png

That doesn't get me much of what I need to play in Champions League!!

But, perhaps I should one day start building up a "real-world" toolkit too, you know, just in case I decide to renovate an old house or something like that.

A lot of the older players of course have been able to build their toolkits early, under the "early adopter discount scheme" - which crypto is full of. Even if someone only played to earn and didn't put in a penny, it still takes a lot of balls to hold through the crypto thins, in the hope for phat thicks. And because none of this can be held in the hand like a drill it feels somehow less real, more surreal and far easier to justify eyewatering expenditures that would never be made IRL.

One difference between the cards and the tools though, is it is far easier to use Splinterlands assets than power tools and, a lot less chance of doing more damage than they are worth and chopping off fingers or limbs in the process. Rather than participating in tournaments, I would be applicating tourniquets.

Less cleaning too.

And speaking of cleaning - it is time to drop tools for the night and head to bed, because it is a normal working Monday tomorrow, followed by a few more hours of kitchen demolition in the hope to get it ready for those who do know how to use their tools, to come in and get the job done - while I play games on the internet.

Have a good week ahead!

Splinterlands is most popular game in Hive community. Great performance on first round.

Wow. Good for you.

On a just vaguely related topic: I bought a new Ryobi drill this week. I had completely cooked the old one (Black and Decker) so they weren't in consideration. I like DeWalt tools a lot, but the Ryobi was on sale with 2 batteries so...

The battery packs are a bit of an issue these days - as they are all made to be specialized to the brand, which makes sense - but ties you in with convenience. I don't have so many tools, so it doesn't matter much :)

I have a B&D string trimmer and blower (both of which work just fine) so my battery collection isn't unused. I still have working circular saw and reciprocating saw. If those need replacement I'll go Ryobi.

Makita is really common here with the tradies. They are decent from what I understand.

Makita is good stuff. I have a couple of corded tools, and in my working days worked on some bigger Makita equipment.

Milwaukee is the hot set up for the trades here. It's 2x DeWalt or Ryobi price, but it is really the 'cats ass' here. My guy here and my nephew in Washington both swear by Milwaukee. That's enough for me, but for the price difference I don't need the best. I am much more a hobbyist than a working man :)

Oh nice!

I haven't played a tournament for months and months and months... I just felt that my collection wasn't currently competitive enough and I wasn't doing well enough to justify the cost of entry. I did enjoy them though, I should probably dip my toe back in to see what it's like. Although if you're playing now, and you tend to rip me a new one, well.... yikes. I'd need a metaphorical tourniquet.

I am renting a lot to play, so may as well use them :)

First round I had an easy run - so far, lost 3/3 of round 2 :D

I have been off and on with tournaments as the competition continues to get tougher. While I often have an advantage with a complete set, the players are even better. Now, since I am over jealous with my SPS, I avoid gambling them away in most tournaments. I hope to continue learning the meta and get back in some soon. Need to prepare for SplinterFest tournaments soon!

:D

This one was only 70 SPS to join, so for a couple days of fun, that isn't too bad, is it?

Need to prepare for SplinterFest tournaments soon!

This will be very interesting to see people play live - Some will click through like lightning as they know it so well - some (like I would) umm and ah until the counter is near zero and then rush :D

I get the pleasure of pulling the toilet tomorrow! We redid the floor in the bathroom a while ago but didn’t know at the time that we should use the vinyl plank floor not the wood plank. Wood isn’t the best stuff to be used in a bathroom lol especially with one little boy that was learning how to pee on the toilet! Lol I’m glad we are past the stage where he got it more on the seat and lid than he did in the toilet. Needless to say, the floor needs a deep clean and bleach action! I’m just nervous what I’ll find under there lol.

Ah Splinterlands tournaments. I’m not good enough for the higher ones but I’ve played a bunch over time. I don’t get the opportunity to do it often but I think I’ll give it a look to see if I can find one I like. I’m picky with some of them! Lol it would be cool to use gladiator cards in tournaments too!

You lucky thing!!

Lol! Yeah - perhaps not. I once renovated a friends place which had 40 year old wooden floors in the bathroom.... shudders.

it would be cool to use gladiator cards in tournaments too!

I don't have any gladiator cards... I know nearly nothing about them :)

That moment where you're on top of the leaderboard is definitely worth a screenie especially if you know it's not likely to last XD

Is the part time helper friend, tradie or both? Get them to show you how to usee the circular saw so that if/when you get one of your own you don't have to potentially apply tourniquets? :D

Well down the order already :)

ex-tradie, now teacher of tradies...
I should pay him for lessons instead! :D

That doesn't sound like a bad investment either.

For those who know how to use power tools, it can save them a lot of money. Professionals cost in labor. But it is becoming a trade left to a few.

The costs keep going up for this kind of work, with the inflation on materials not helping matters.

It seems the kitchen is still in mess. I wonder how do you cook foods, on tube?

tube?

It will be a month or more til we have a working kitchen - we have a microwave - and the bathroom has a sink to wash dishes :)

Do you think that powering down hive to buy a plot of land would be worth it? Or would selling my lvl 2 KRALUS be a better idea?

It's amazing how tournaments hone your skills though. You get ideas from your rivals like the Grandmaster Rathe above. When I first played golf one of the elderly guys told me you don't really start getting really good until you start playing tournaments because it concentrates the mind. He was right and it is the same for Splinterlands. The level is just that bit better. In ranked battles the competition is good but in tournaments people bring their A game.

I'm simply in awe on how you relate playing Splinterland on the internet to pricing and acquiring you tool set.
There must really exist some relationship between a lot of seemingly abstracts, only that we do not look, analyze or imagine we'll enough to see them.

The new soulbound reward cards motivate alot of people to go back playing brawls. I love tournaments but you have to be on your game. Its a level up. The first round you hammered him.so don't put yourself down that bad.
