Splinterlands - Google Trends Overview

I run websites with many readers and I thought I'd apply some of the analysis I am doing to Splinterlands.

This is the 5 year trend chart of splinterlands globally. As you can see we had two major spikes. The second one happened during the SPS airdrop where heavily invested early adopters received an equivalent of 50k USD per month. As you can imagine this was a very effective "advertising campaign" to the extend that low income countries that faced economic challenges joined in masses.

The Google Trends chart of the last 5 years also clearly shows that Asian countries perform the most searches.

Compared to the last five years, this chart shows the last year only. United Arab Emirates, Greece and Cuba are new. Will they become the next Philipinnes in the new bullrun?

In comparison with other games

Among the five games picked (Splinterlands, Axie Infinity, Sorare, Alien Worlds and Mines of Dalarnia) Splinterlands ranks 4th. Search interst is 1 point for Mines of Dalarnia, 2 for Splinterlands, 4 for Alien Worlds, 35 for Sorare and 40 for Axie. I believe that this might be a sign that our "bullrun" will take much longer to play out. First other more established games will continue to rise.

Now let's analyse the Splinterlands website traffic.

web traffic 2.png

Unsurprisingly, the traffic looks similar. It seems that in April and August 2022 a paid search campaign was running that helped with the final peak but overall didn't have a significant impact on traffic. The decline seems to slow down as well, suggesting the decline might reach it's bottom soon. In total semrush suggests Splinterlands has roughly 21k monthly website visitors currently.

What's my take on it?

  • Splinterlands generally moves with the market. The two previous spikes suggest that the game can skyrocket over night very very quickly. To give you an example search interest went from 4 to 100 in less than a month.
  • Search interest never went back to previous lows suggesting that a small but loyal fanbase remains.
  • Early indications suggest that Splinterlands cannot capitalize as much as other games on the current beginning of the bull run. Compared to well established games like Axie and Sorare, search interest hasn't increased much.

Are we a hidden gem or a lost cause? What do you think?
