Rent Out SPS or Use It As A Booster?

If you have SPS, you might be wondering whether you should use it as a booster or rent it out

I have wondered the same and didn't find any posts about it. So I dived into it myself.. and the results are really shocking actually. First the basics: we now have SPS staking "requirements" for earning SPS in SPL. This gives SPS its real use case and has sent its price up by around 50%. So far so good. We can also see the table here which gives us the multipliers for each league and the required staked SPS to achieve it:

You can see that it requires around 2-3 times the amount to receive a doubling in the booster. The higher the booster the more you will also require. The table actually continues beyond the 12x, but it will take many times the SPS to reach them. In other words, there is a diminishing return. That begs the question: does it makes sense to push the booster to the highest amounts possible, or does it make sense to delegate some SPS and earn some DEC in return?

Here is an example of what I am currently getting in Silver II:

grafik.png

The booster is quite high with 14.33, but this is also because I am receiving a 9% guild bonus. And as you can probably guess, I have way more SPS staked to receive the normal 10x booster. With almost 165k staked, I have around 160k more than needed to receive the 10x. But although this is multiples times higher, the booster is only 3.15 higher than the 10x one. That's quite a large diminishing return, but it's exactly how it should work, otherwise players like me would be receiving huge amounts of SPS.

Let's do the math

What I want to do here is to compare the SPS warning from the normal 10x booster to the 13.33 (or 14.33 with guild bonus) booster and see if it would be a better idea to rent it out on the market.

  • First, when we do the math I am getting around 0.000062001 SPS per reward point (0.21/3387)

  • Then let's look at the SPS earned for the 13.15 booster compared to the "normal" booster of 10x

With the booster of 13.15 I would be getting 3107 RPs or 0.192 SPS
With the booster of 10 I would be getting 2363 RPS or 0.146 SPS

This is about a 23% reduction is earnings.

Now if we assume that I would play 24 battles in Silver II this would give me around

0.192*24 ~4.6 SPS/day

0.146*24 ~3.5 SPS/day

The difference is 1.1 SPS or around 33 DEC at current prices

In other words playing at the 10x booster gives around a 23% reduced rate in earnings or 1.1 less SPS in Silver II.

Something already tells me that I could be using that SPS better on the market. Having 160k additional SPS gives me only 1.1 SPS more a day when playing in this league. Obviously this will greatly vary on which league you play in so you should do the math for yourself.

If I decide to rent out my 160k SPS at current prices of 0.009 DEC per SPS I could still play with the 10x booster and receive 1440 DEC per day (!) That's almost a 44x greater profit than using SPS as an additional booster!!

Conclusion

These results are rather shocking to me. I expected the booster's diminishing returns to play a bigger role, but a 44x greater profit for renting out the SPS is a very large difference indeed.

Caveat!

But who should I or you rent the SPS to? A quick glance at the market shows that most players wanting to receive a delegation are bot farms.

I am not going to judge anyone wanting to delegate to the highest bidder, but keep in mind that you will probably be actively supporting bot farms if you do.

Yeah, I just keep my SPS for myself right now. Amazing how many bot farms there must be.

For the past few years I've been seeing posts from people saying that if you're not making a profit from renting, then you're going to use that time and it's going to be more profitable for them.

Interesting calculation but I'm not 100% sure whether the calcuation is that simple since the size of the stake has a direct influence on the number of chests that you recieve in battle. So if you have a bigger stake working for you, then you will not only earn more daily reward chests but also season reward chests. However I'm not sure how it would be possible to calculate precisely the return differences. So I believe your way of calculating it is pretty much the best way of doing it :-). Nice post!

yes, but I think what this post shows is that the bonus for additional staked SPS for SPS as well as RPs for the chests is far far less than the APR that can be earned for renting out sps. This is all subject to change of course and I would expect these calculations to change rather fast with all the things ongoing atm

You're right, I guess most or some of the accounts wanting to receive delegations are not farmers. However I think some accounts will still wants to maximize their earning capacities with their SPS. This calculations you've done is just mind blowing, I've never even thought of it.
