Hello SPL family

Another week, another set of Battle Mage secrets. This week's highlighted ruleset isGoing The Distance. In this ruleset, only ranged attackers are allowed to be used in battle. We know that ranged attackers cannot attack the 1st position, so to enable them to attack, you need to use a summoner that provides close-range ability, or you can use a unit with close-range ability. Close range provides the capability for a ranged attacker to attack the 1st position. Below are the units with close range ability.

For defense, you can use a unit with the return fire ability. The return fire ability activates when hit with a ranged attack, and monsters with return fire will return reduced damage back to their attacker. The computation for return damage is equal to the damage of the attacker divided by 2, rounded up. Below are the units with return fire ability.

The battle I will show comes from the SPS Dao Free Tournament. This is the Poseidar Wild Silver Invitational where I only placed 24th and received an 81.6 SPS reward. One of my matches had the Going The Distance ruleset, so I chose it to demonstrate how I won our battle.

MY BATTLE

The battle condition is 21 mana caps and the elements that you can use are fire, water, life and death. The rulesets are Aimless, Armored Up and Going The Distance.

Because the ruleset is "Going The Distance," and the units that can be placed on the battlefield are limited, I chose Ilthain as my summoner, a 4-mana summoner who grants +1 speed and return fire ability to all units. For the 1st position, I selected Venari Marksrat, a ranged attacker with martyr ability, to boost Anachron Bolter's stats to level 4. For the 2nd position, I chose Anachron Bolter, a dual attack monster with ranged and magic attack abilities, and headwinds ability. Headwinds reduce the ranged damage dealt to the enemy. For the 3rd position, I chose Venari Crystalsmith, a range attacker with tank heal ability. I included her in the lineup to heal the unit in the 1st position. For the last position, I chose Xenith Archer, a ranged attacker with no ability.

It reached round 4 before any monster died. My Xenith Archer died due to a return fire from his attack on Naga Windmaster. In this round, my Venari Crystalsmith also died due to a return fire from her attack on Naga Windmaster. However, Naga Windmaster from the opponent also died from the attack of my Venari Crystalsmith.

In round 5, Venari Marksrat died from the attack of Gargoya Devil. Because of this, Venari Marksrat's martyr ability triggered, thereby increasing Anachron Bolter's stats by +1. Consequently, in round 5, Anachron Bolter gained 2 ranged and magic damage, 4 speed, and 8 life.

In round 6, Anachron Bolter killed the opponent's Gargoya Devil. Because Angelic Mandarin of the opponent couldn't attack anymore due to lacking close-range ability, it took until round 8 before Anachron Bolter killed the opponent's Angelic Mandarin. Thus, the battle ended in round 8.

  • Overall, my plan to use the double attack monster, Anachron Bolter, was successful. Because of his magic attack, he didn't receive additional damage from the return fire ability of the summoner.

  • Due to Ilthain's return fire ability, the summoner also incurred damage with each attack from the opponent because of the return damage from the summoner's return fire ability.

  • Placing Venari Marksrat in the 1st position was also successful. When Venari Marksrat died, its martyr ability triggered, benefiting Anachron Bolter by increasing all his stats by +1.
