Monster Cards 101: Melee, Ranged & Magic Attacks Explained

Monster cards are the backbone of every Splinterlands battle. Understanding the different attack types is crucial for winning matches strategically.
Types of Attacks
- Melee Attack: Melee monsters strike the enemy in the front row. They are powerful at close range but can be blocked by high-defense tanks.
- Ranged Attack: Ranged monsters hit enemies from the back row, ignoring most front-line defenses. They are excellent for consistent damage without risking themselves.
- Magic Attack: Magic monsters ignore armor entirely, attacking directly at the health points. They are perfect against heavily armored enemies, but usually have lower health themselves.
Position Matters
Where you place monsters can determine whether they survive the first few rounds. Melee monsters lead the charge, ranged monsters stay protected in the back, and magic monsters sit safely, dealing damage through defenses.
Abilities Interact with Attack Types
Some abilities enhance attacks:
- Snipe: Lets ranged/magic monsters target back-row enemies
- Reach: Allows melee monsters to hit back-row enemies
- Shield: Reduces damage from melee or ranged attacks
Strategic Tip for Beginners
New players often overemphasize raw attack stats. The best teams balance attack types, durability, and abilities. A mixed team using melee, ranged, and magic attacks efficiently usually wins over a team with just high-power cards.
You need to know your monster type, know its ability, and place it wisely. The combination of attack type, position, and ability is what wins battles.
