Card Spotlight #14: Torhilo the Frozen

The card we will be discussing today is Torhilo the Frozen.

This massive frozen bull is one of the Frost Giant’s only friends left in the world. He has lived for hundreds of years and is growing tired, but Torhillo still charges at everything he faces with vigor.

We would rate this card based on:

• Cost to buy/rent this card. How affordable and accessible is the card.
• Card Stats. How balanced the card is based on its role.
• Card Effect. How useful is its effect based on the role of the card.
• Strengths and Weaknesses. If the card can counter other cards and/or be countered easily by others or not.
• Positioning. Adaptability of where the card can be placed.
• Compatibility. How useful it is on its current element.

  Before Chaos Legions was released, Torhilo had a high rental shooting up to 60 DEC per day. I knew it because I was going to rent Torhilo that day but I didn't because he's almost if not more expensive than The Kraken due to people renting him. That shows how useful Torhilo is by the large amount of people renting him.

Below is the buy cost of the card at the time of this writing.

For an Epic card, this is quite cheap. It would also serve you a good purpose because it counters mages which is one of the strongest this season. He also has good armor and health to be useful in normal situations as well.

Card Stats ||

Mana: 9 || Damage: 4 || Speed: 1 || Armor: 4 || Health: 8
Torhilo the Frozen's stats are on the high side. With high damage, high armor, high health and good effect all sums up a great tank. I am sure that you can wipe out your opponent waaaaay before Torhilo dies. ════════════════════════════════

Card Effect ||

|| Magic damage gets halved (rounded up), except attack 1 which deals 0 damage.
Void is the anti mage ability. It halves all magic damage and lets your tank survive longer. It's a must have ability for tanks.
|| Gains 1.5x increased stats if it's the only Monster on the team alive
Last Stand is not useful in high mana because Torhilo is your main tank. He stands at the front and most of the time, he dies first. In low mana where you have a few back row, they might die from a blast or snipe ability leaving Torhilo activating his Last Stand Ability.
|| Target's armor is destroyed when hit by an attack from Monsters with Shatter.
Shatter is an effect that may or may not be useful. To me, personally, I don't find it useful because Torhilo the Frozen has slow speed meaning he attacks last, and he has melee damage which does not go through armor. Shatter is a good bonus for if there's extra 1-2 armor but with 4 damage and/or higher on higher levels, it doesn't seem that strong.

Strengths Weaknesses ||

|| Torhilo's main strength is his armor, health and ability. All are on the high note and it's accompanied by great ability. He's useful in all situations with or without mage enemies.

|| Torhilo's main weakness is his high mana. That means you're not allowed to use him on mid and low mana because it would provide huge deficit on damage. However, there are other situations like water only where he's golden. ════════════════════════════════

Positioning ||

As usual, Torhilo the Frozen makes way by being the front line. He's protected by King Crustacean with Water Elemental on the third. Mantoid and Centaur makes up for the missing damage alongside eliminating possible healers and supports.

Either go for a second tank or a healer. The mana is not high to get another good tank and thus, I chose to have a second healer instead.

A good generic card. Can act as a mid tank or sneak blocker.

A neutral sniper.

Another neutral sniper.

ROUND 1:

Round 1 is rather peaceful one. I did a little bit of damage to Oshannus while breaking Medusa's armor.

ROUND 2:

By Round 2 Turn 8, Medusa dies from my snipers leaving a good battle of 5v5.

By end of Round 2, my ally King Crustacean healed Torhilo but opponent's Feasting Seaweed kills him.

ROUND 3:

By end of Round 3, Opponent Oshannus's dies making my win rate for this game much higher. A tank is important to allows your back row use their opportunity or sneak skills. Without Oshannus, Feasting Seaweed now takes up the front line.

ROUND 4:

By round 4 Turn 6, King Crustacean was sniped by my Mantoid and Centaur.

By end of round 4, Feasting Seaweed fell from battle making Venari Wavesmith the front line.

ROUND 5:

By end of Round 5, Venari Wavesmith dies leaving Ice Pixie to take the front. It's a turn until I win and Torhilo the Frozen still stands strong.

ROUND 6:

Game ended by Round 6 when Ice Pixie leaves the battle.

Compatibility ||

• Torhilo the Frozen is most compatible with healers. Even though he's a strong tank, a healer is still required for him to be immortal. A good back row is also required for you to finish the opponent before Torhilo falls from battle.

Before doing the final verdict, here is the sample of a battle using this card.

The Battle was so long that I need to decrease the quality to be able to upload it. Sorry for that.

Final Thoughts

With all the evidences that we gathered, we could say that Torhilo the Frozen is really strong and is a good investment for the future. Even being an old card, he's still one of the best anti mage in the game. If you have extra money, go and have one. It's going to pay on its own.
