Card Spotlight #15: Djinn Oshannus

I tried to recreate the old mages build one last time and here's what happened.

The card we will be discussing today is Djinn Oshannus.

Dawn of the Djinn 3 of 4 - The Djinn are angry at the way they were tricked by the Planet, but also appreciative that they can now enjoy this limited freedom, each trapped by natural forces. The Djinn possess powerful ancient magic of their own, which is now charged into the force of one element for each of them. The ancient demons of war are an awkward bunch to be chosen as a planetary defensive force, but they are also impressively capable of the job. As long as they are bound by the Planet, they will do its bidding. Whatever their would-be choices and allegiances, they will fight against the Chaos Legion to protect the sixth mana gate.

We would rate this card based on:

• Cost to buy/rent this card. How affordable and accessible is the card.
• Card Stats. How balanced the card is based on its role.
• Card Effect. How useful is its effect based on the role of the card.
• Strengths and Weaknesses. If the card can counter other cards and/or be countered easily by others or not.
• Positioning. Adaptability of where the card can be placed.
• Compatibility. How useful it is on its current element.

  Below is the rental of the card at the time of this writing.

  
  
  
  
  A month ago, Oshannus is an expensive card for its formidable offensive and defensive stats. It's a win condition for water mages. Right now, with the removal of free Alric Stormbringer as a summoner, it became way cheaper to rent.

Below is the buy cost of the card at the time of this writing.

Given that Oshannus's rental is at its lowest. It also meant that the purchase is one of the lowest. If you're a veteran player or an investor in Splinterlands and have a copy of Alric Stormbringer, it's best to get a copy of this one as well.

Card Stats ||

Mana: 8 || Damage: 2 || Speed: 5 || Armor: 0 || Health: 10
Djinn Oshannus has an amazing stat both as a tank. Given that he has magic damage, he's best to use as a secondary tank or the one behind the main tank, preferably a shield one to counter all types of damage. The 8 mana is very worth for the amount of both damage and defense this guy would bring. The only complain I would say for this is that except for the level 1 ability, void, the other two, Phase and Force Field, doesn't seem to be really helpful. ════════════════════════════════

Card Effect ||

Void || Magic damage gets halved (rounded up), except attack 1 which deals 0 damage.
Void is the second best ability next to shield. With shield reducing damage to 2 of 3 damage types, it's undoubtedly the best. Void is coming in second reducing damage for magic damage.

Phase || Magic attack can miss this Monster (using the same hit/miss calculation as for Melee and Ranged attacks)
Phase is not the best but a good ability to have. To me, it's probably the least useful of all abilities since it only adds miss chance to magic damage and does not do anything for others. There's also no increased dodge chance for Phase so it's not as useful as other abilities.

Forcefield || This Monster takes only 1 damage from attacks with power 5+.
Forcefield is a godsend on higher league when all of the other monsters have high levels. I would assume it's hard to play against this because you're required to play smart than strong. Buffing all your monsters to the max is countered by this ability.

Strengths Weaknesses ||

|| Health, Speed, Damage type. These are his strengths. A strong front line that has a damage that cannot be evaded. That's who Djinn Oshannus is.

|| The only weakness for this card is the high mana. That means using Djinn Oshannus in low mana matches is really bad. Higher the mana, the more cards can support him increasing your chances of winning. ════════════════════════════════

Positioning ||

• The best position for this card is on the second position behind a tank. This abuses Djinn Oshannus's ability to attack from other positions while assuring that there's a fall back tank if your main does fall. The thing that you should remember is that in this battle, it has a Target Practice Rule Set. All Ranged and Magic damage user gains snipe ability.

ROUND 1:

With my Mage Snipers, round 1 ends with killing King Crustacean and Pirate Captain.

ROUND 2:

Round 2 ends with reducing some of my armor but killing Sniping Narwhall in the process.

ROUND 3:

By end of round 3, my opponent's Venari Wavesmith and Water Elemental dies leaving Serpent of Eld alone in the battle.

ROUND 4:

Game ended in round 4 with 2 damage on Onyx Sentinel and 4 damage on Djinn OShannus. Everyone else leaves unscathed.

Compatibility ||

• The best combo with this card for me is with skills providing -1 magic damage. This allows the void ability to shine without even getting a shred of damage on the monster.

Final Thoughts

With all the evidences that we gathered, we could say that Djinn Oshannus is pretty strong. He's useful for both damage and as a tank. It's a very efficient buy that you can use with a lot of situation. Definitely one of the best cards out there.
