Card Spotlight #17: Magma Troll

The card we will be discussing today is Magma Troll.

It is a wonder that these huge destructive beasts of the Burning Lands don't bring their own cave walls crashing down upon themselves each day. They don't use weapons; the Trolls' fists are stronger than any club. Trolls never emerge from the caves, they are allergic to sunlight, gradually turning to stone when exposed for extended periods of time.

We would rate this card based on:

• Cost to buy/rent this card. How affordable and accessible is the card.
• Card Stats. How balanced the card is based on its role.
• Card Effect. How useful is its effect based on the role of the card.
• Strengths and Weaknesses. If the card can counter other cards and/or be countered easily by others or not.
• Positioning. Adaptability of where the card can be placed.
• Compatibility. How useful it is on its current element.

  Magma Troll is quite affordable being a common card. It is free to play and can be rented for 0.10 DEC. As always, rent only if you're planning to use higher level monsters that are free to play. Otherwise, it's an expense that would provide no benefits.

Below is the buy cost of the card at the time of this writing.

Purchasing Magma Troll is efficient in the sense that you can use them when the free rotation is off. You can play him for free now but that may not be true for the future. The stats are decent and it's a contender for Little League.

Card Stats ||

Mana: 4 || Damage: 1 || Speed: 2 || Armor: 0 || Health: 3
Magma Troll is a step down to Radiated Brute. If Radiated Brute is stronger, why use Magma Troll? It's because of mana. With 4 Mana, you can use this in more rule sets like Little League. Little League is a free win rule set if you know what you're doing. If you have a specialized team for that rule set, I assure you that you will have high to 100% win rate whenever you have Little League Rule Set. ════════════════════════════════

Card Effect ||

Reach || Melee attack Monsters with the Reach ability may attack from the second position on the team Reach is a good ability for melee in order to attack from second position.It may not be the best but still a good ability.

Affliction || When a Monster with Affliction hits a target, it has a 50% chance of applying Affliction on the target causing it to be unable to be healed.
Affliction is a good ability to counter healing for tanks. The down side of the skill is that unlike Snare Ability, it's not sure. There's only 50% chance that a monster with Affliction can inflict the debuff. That's 50% per round since monsters only attack once per round.

Strengths Weaknesses ||

|| Magma Troll's strength is his mana. Being included in Little League Rule Set is a huge advantage since most cards would be unavailable. Lower mana also means you're allowed to put more monsters or more powerful monsters. It's a good strength to have at all times.

|| Unfortunately, the damage is a clear weakness. This can be buffed by using inspire ability or the more common, Tarsa summoner. Considering there's an easy way to buff his damage, it is a weakness but not too much of a weakness as well. ════════════════════════════════

Positioning ||

• The best position for this card is on the second position. Reach is there for a reason. Magma Troll is not super tanky to place in the first position. He acts as a cushion in case your main tank dies. This is advantageous so you'll have more time to kill your opponent before it reach your ranged units which cannot attack from the first position.

ROUND 1:

By end of Round 1, Horny Toad already died but my Living Lava now is in critical condition. Unicorn Mustang's high speed proves to be a problem when facing green elements and the contrast between Living Lava and Unicorn Mustang's speed is a crucial problem.

ROUND 2:

By end of Round 2, Living Lava, as well as Serpentine Spy leaves the battle making Magma Troll the main front line. Khmer Princess also dies along with them but Unicorn Mustang stands still with close to half health.

ROUND 3:

With diligence, Unicorn Mustang dies by end of Round 3. Magma Troll also died on that round leaving Tenyii Striker to be the main man. Opponent's Parasitic Growth also now goes to the front disabling his opportunity ability.

ROUND 4:

By end of Round 4, Parasitic Growth and Goblin Chariot also fall from battle. There's a clear difference in health which is the winning factor of my team.

ROUND 5:

Game ended on Round 5 with Tenyii Striker at 4 health and Djinn Apprentice at 1 health.

Compatibility ||

• The best combo with this card for me is with inspire cards and Tarsa. Anything that boosts melee damage and health is a good combo card for Magma Troll. Increased damage allows this card to attack from a safe distance and health for in case the main tank dies.

Final Thoughts

With all the evidences that we gathered, we could say that even if Magma Troll is not the best reach ability user for Fire element, he's still a great contender. He shines on Little League where monsters that only has 4 mana and below are allowed. His stronger counterpart, Radiated Brute, is not applicable for she has 5 mana. Leveling up Magma Troll also is not a bad idea. Affliction helps in a lot of battle and since his ability is reach which targets the first position monster, you're assured that he would be targetting the main tank for his chance to debuff the opponent with Affliction.
