My first impression of Gods Unchained

In my quest to find other ways to explore other blockchain games and possibly even play to earn, I decided to give Gods Unchained a chance. It is a popular game that has been heavily shilled by many people on Twitter, and Hive, with @acidyo being the most frequent one I encounter.

My brother @ebingo called me earlier today and talked about the game as well. He said he'd decided to give it a shot as well, and I figured, well, why not try something new as well.

Gods Unchained is a blockchain game that also champions the play-to-earn mantra like Splinterlands. On the homepage, I was attracted to this interesting message that outrightly highlights the aim of this game.

image.png

I was pleased by the fact that the leader of the project put himself out there, I also like the short message underneath that clearly describes how the game intends to reward players for their time and effort.

Before I give my impression of the game, you have to understand that my perspective of blockchain and card battle games as a whole is heavily influenced by Splinterlands. So, on numerous occasions, I will compare Gods Unchained to other games, including Splinterlands and Axie Infinity.

I also need to stress that my view is purely subjective and should not be misconstrued as an assertion about which game is better.

Getting Started

The first port of call was the official website of the game where I easily signed up with my email and a password. Immediately you click on "signup" a pop-up suggests you download the desktop application of the game.

After signing up, you confirm in your email and then get straight into the action.

I must say that when compared to Axie infinity, this game is a lot easier to get started with. On Axie I had to download two different applications and still couldn't do anything because there wasn't any resource on the page.

Getting started is a bit more stressful than Splinterlands though. However, I must add that the stress might just be because I'm more familiar with Splinterlands.

Also, on Splinterlands, you don't have to download any application that takes up my limited disk space. On top of that, Splinterlands has a mobile version and I reckon Gods Unchained will be so damn awesome when it comes to mobile.

Anyway, unlike Splinterlands, I actually played Gods Unchained for free and got myself a pack at the end of the tutorial. The battle rules seem easy enough but it will take some time for me to familiarise myself with all the moving parts.

Moving parts

So far, I've only played the tutorial and attempted a ranked battle but I'm too scared to do anything beyond this point below.

image.png

Now I know it's just a game but Gods Unchained has so many sound effects and moving parts that makes it a lot more intense than Splinterlands. It doesn't have that casual nature of SPlinterlands but again, this might just be this way because I'm already familiar with Splinterlands.

Anyway, unlike Splinterlands where you just set up your team and then watch battles, Gods Unchained requires players to actively participate in each round.

During the tutorial, I got to experience a battle where I predominantly used three monsters to take out my opponent's god. In each round, I actually had to do something; so it was either taking cards to the board, boosting attack with my god's special traits, or directing them towards the card on my opponent's deck to attack.

Yet to understand tokenomics, earnings, and the marketplace

I just got started a while ago, so I'm not fully conversant with the tokenmics of the platform. If I'm going to invest my money and time into the game, I need to understand how the rewards are paid out and stuff.

On Splinterlands, ranked battles earn you DEC, so I'm guessing GU has something of that nature. I gave up on Axie before I could even get to this part.

The good thing I can say about GU, especially considering that it's on Ethereum is that it's not annoyingly expensive. Axie infinity requires thousands of dollars or for you to wait for one of those scholarship programs that I really don't understand or care about.

Losing is still winning

After the tutorial, I tried a ranked battle and lost it dreadfully. However, I somehow still earned 6 packs from the experience.

I'm guessing the reason is that I lost to a superior player but still gave the player a run for their money? I don't know, I'm just trying to console myself for sucking so hard but at least I dealt some damage to my opponent's god.

The battle was a lot more intense than Splinterlands and requires my laptop to do a lot of work. It's not as passive and easy as Splinterlands but that's not a bad thing.

Awesome Graphics

Another thing I can say for sure is that Gods Unchained has really impressive graphics. The artwork, sound effects, and background of the game are just exquisite.

Sometimes it lags on my system but I guess it might just be because I have shitty internet in Nigeria. Also, the pack opening thing is also pretty cool.

image.png

Other than the fact that 'Mana" is part of the gameplay, I think this is another thing that's quite similar to Splinterlands. I know there are different rarities of monsters but that's something I haven't figured out yet but I will in the future.

In Summary

Gods Unchained is the second card battle game that I'm getting involved with and so far so good, I like what I see. I feel like I really should have been playing this game a long time before today but better late than never.

I obviously didn't qualify for the Gods token airdrop because I'm a new player but that's okay. I'm just going to be opening the pack and getting a hang of how the game works, and try to get up to my next milestone, level 2.

It is a game that I will continue to explore and hopefully start winning more ranked battles. I'm also glad we have a community on hive that enables us to share our experience and tactics to improve our experience.

I think you still get gods tokens if you finish the weekend battles and earn flux, bulldog or someone has tutorials on how to claim those after the 5 days waiting, not really sure myself I just click buttons and think they purposely make it convoluted to know what you truly own if anything.

I'll just keep playing it whenever I can then. I still get points when I lose, so that's awesome. I'm going to be losing a lot of matches now that I'm still understanding the game, so something good.

the gods rewards aren't based on the weekend tourney, btw. It's over the whole week like 30 wins and 60 games for max points which will equal $gods! Weekend tourney is just for divine order packs!

Thanx I will try to play more often, in a comment below I captured that timeframe but never knew what the exact details were. I did get 3 Gods when I checked immutable so that is nice now I can combine cards :P

I'm like you and ignored this game until recently. I still haven't played it, but I think this post has inspired me to give it a shot at last

It's not as passive and easy as Splinterlands but that's not a bad thing.

This sounds like my cup of tea. Something that requires you to actually think about what is going on during the match. If only Pokemon TCG would come to the blockchain. That or Yu-Gi-Oh, the only two tcg games that I grew up playing and loving.

Yeah it's really fun. My laptop or the game lags sometimes though, so you could miss a turn because of that.

Anyway, I'm very certain that this is a game I'm so going to enjoy. The sound effects, moving cards around and all that stuff really gets the blood rushing.

I don't even know why I took so long to start playing it.

Yeah it's really cool. Do the tutorial to get the basics and then after that, try some ranked battles to see how it goes. I'm almost at level 2, despite losing.

The part I find most interesting is that when you lose you still win. In Splinterlands losing is losing lol
