Scavo Chemist - Splinterlands Art Contest 178th Week
Here's my entry for Splinterlands' weekly art contest.
After my first entry last week and receiving feedback from the people around me, I got really motivated to participate in this week's as well. Guess I'll become a regular at this point considering how much I enjoy doing digital art.
My works are far from perfect, but trying to perfect them over time, little by little is what makes the whole journey enjoyable and worthwhile - like a story that unfolds one step at a time.
Warning(🤣): I'm no pro, but if you think this art is something worth a little "awe", then I'll show you how to do it, tho, you'll need some Photoshop knowledge.
So, without further ado, let's break down the process:
Setup:
- Photoshop
- XP-Pen Deco 01 V2
And a Splinterlands Character to draw from 😛
First
I did some outlining using a pressure pen (details in my previous post HERE). I started from the eyes
then the "chin" (if you can call it that), then his hair since it's over everything.
BE AWARE THO
Layer orders are important, now it wouldn't be a grave mistake to misplace them at first (which was the case when I drew this), but getting into the habit of having your layers sorted, saves you some hassle later on.
Second
Was his hand holding the tube thingie, it was hella difficult to get the hand's angle right and to make it look like that he's REALLY holding it, but here we are. Not perfect, but I'm content with how it turned out.
Third
Then it was time for some coloring, I started simple and used the eyedropper tool to sample from the main in-game card and colored the poor guy FLAT. Honestly, the color combination turned out real nice and I didn't mind leaving it at that, but there was some more I could do, so I jumped deeper.
Fourth
As for inside his goggles, I googled for honeycomb patterns. I copied the image into the painting, put it over the lenses(?), selected the green area and chopped off the extras. Then, I set the blending mode to Divide since it looked best. The pattern over the lenses before putting it in Divide blending mode was black and it turned to this color which perfectly matched the original character when set in Divide.
Final Touches
I did some modifications after the last pic shown here. I made another layer with the orangish color you see at the tip of his hair over his hair's layer. Masked it, and unmasked the parts which were not the tips. I used the soft brush here to mask/unmask to give it the sort of FADE feeling.
Plus, for his chin, I painted over his face with a big soft round brush and lowered the opacity to imitate the light in his face depicted by the orangish hair/fur... whatever this guy is made of lmao
Finally, for the gas emitting from the poison: I selected the area around and above the tube, put a gray gradient over it and lowered the opacity to fit the picture. As for the skeleton, I was gonna find a logo on the internet, but then I decided to actually draw it over the tube haha
Bonus
So, before I started outlining, I did this "doodle" kind of thing to give myself a faint idea of what I was about to draw and deviate myself from copying and pasting exatly the same as the original drawing. So, here's some abomination I created in the process lol
The Original
And here's the Original Scavo Chemist from the in-game card.
A very helpful process I love that. Well done with the artwork thank you for sharing. Keep it up!
