# Going nowhere - Splinter Stats Ranked Rewards Season 30 Report Card
@aussieninja

Hi everyone!
After the season refresh, I was absolutely pumped to start this season with ranked points of 2,650... meaning I started halfway between the Gold I and Diamond III leagues. So so excited!
I usually spend the entire season trudging through Gold, only to get into the Diamond leagues in the last day or so... and then have very limited time to actually play with the cards and abilities I know how to play.
A really great thing about Splinterlands is that the cards you select in the different leagues are quite different. For example, the card Haunted Spirit from the Death Splinter seems to pop up a lot in the lower leagues, but not so much in Diamond and Champion. The meta changes in the different leagues, and so if you're not used to playing in a lower league, it can actually be pretty hard, even if all your cards are maxed for that league.
I think this is a reason why bots can perform so well. A human has 2 & 1/2 minutes to decide what cards to pick, and in that time they have to navigate the rulesets, the limitations, what cards they have at a suitable level, what abilities work well together and what their opponent is likely to choose.... all that is hard enough, but if you aren't used to playing in a particular league, and suddenly cards you select don't have the abilities they normally have, then you're in trouble.
It's a great feature and gives the game so much playability... but obviously in this scenario the bot coder can take as long as they like to work out the best cards to play in each scenario in each league. I'm not anti-bot, if anything that motivates me more to try less used combinations... but... sometimes combinations aren't popular because they don't win as often.
Anyway, I was so pumped to reach 3135 in Diamond II last season, and then reset to 2,650 this season... so much of my work was already done for me! Yeah! Wahoo!
Except.....
I ended up sliding so far backwards, it took me the ENTIRE season just to get back up to 2,650. I only got passed it and up to 3060 in the last 24 hours.
The power creep of the newer editions is real... which is exactly how I think it needs to be to keep packs selling and give newcomers an advantage over older players... but it is tough, I don't have any CL cards apart from the airdrops and feel super underpowered. Still, a super fun season for me... but I am wondering if I should play less games at the start of the season and more games at the end? Or, will I just continue on my current path of playing while I'm pretending to pay attention in meetings?

An absolutely massive downside to the concept of just waiting until the end of the season to play is that you can't possibly rack up as many season loot chests. I picked up 54 this season, which I loved. Way more exciting that the 40-odd chests I was getting a few seasons ago.
One thing that was super surprising is that because Modern became so loss-heavy for me, I dabbled in Wild again, and started winning a lot. Look at my Win/Loss ratio for Wild... amazing. I actually leap-frogged my Modern rating for a bit there.

One thing I'll see if I can figure out this season is how to best use my time. Is playing Splinterlands and losing a lot still better value and/or more fun than doing something else with that time? Is the season loot chests more important than progress through the leagues?
Win Streaks are the main way to progress up the league ladder... so by waiting you potentially have more chance of getting more or longer win streaks (essentially you'd be playing against accounts with a lower power score than you), but are the seasonal loot chests what excite me? I'm going to have to figure that out.
For the loot chests, is quality better than quantity? Ideally you want to spend the most time in a season in the highest league you can be in... but could a shorter, sharper time getting higher be better?
In terms of this season, getting 237 cards with 3 legendries was absolutely amazing. I do get really excited when those reward cards start to shimmer and shake. I think 237 reward cards in one season might be my record. Even when I got 66 loot chests a couple of seasons ago I won 182 cards. I also got 5616 merits this seasons as opposed to 2106 when I got 66 loot chests. Definitely an argument towards quality over quantity of chests. Theoretically, each chest in the higher leagues should be provide better rewards.

Rentals still going down... part of it is me not relisting cards that fall out... because I'm kind of expecting land any week now. It's a silly reason because you can just cancel the rental... I'm really just being lazy.

I'm still very much enjoying the game and figuring things out. I've seen a bit of chatter about the Rebellion edition release, potentially coming out in 2023... and personally, I'm just not sure if there is a lot of demand for it just at the minute.
There are still 2,831,000 unopened Chaos Legion packs as well as 1,573,238 Riftwatcher packs. Neither seem to be moving super fast. I don't know if the playerbase is just waiting to see what happens with Land 1.5... or if the playerbase is essentially tapped out of funds and is unwilling to invest any more into the game.
Finding new players isn't easy when the entire crypto market seems to be in a bit of a slump. It really is wild for me to think that the success of a fun game can be determined by so many outside global macro factors. I do worry that the time of NFTs and crypto might becoming increasingly less popular as people are mainly drawn to the newest latest exciting thing... but the fact that people can spend so much money on games like Fortnite and Clash of Clans and end up with nothing when they're no longer interested in playing convinces me that the community ownership model is way way way better... the trick is convincing the general public to see that.
Hope your games go well! Hope to see you on the battlefield!

I wish I had got into splinterlands years ago instead of playing clash of clans with the guys at work. I recon I would be up near your level. Are you still working your fitness too?

Hahaha, Clash of Clans was honestly really fun... I think I played it for a year or so but found it actually too intense after a while. I still dabble with Clash Royale and Brawl Stars... I don't feel like I'm letting a clan down if I do badly.
Yeah, I don't necessarily think I'm more experienced in Splinterlands than you at all... but obviously I was able to grab some really powerful cards for super cheap years ago. The biggest thing that helped me was selling off all my STEEM when that got taken over and buying cards.
The fear of not ranking higher is preventing me not to start my journey
That doesn't sound realistic.
They need to update the ToS....
I thought we agreed to a new ToS recently? Wasn't that about the bots? Did I not read it in its entirety even though I agreed to it... yikes.
Yes, but it hasn't been updated yet, so the "bot community" voted to keep botting.
Even in Modern? That's.... not cool.
Yep. Even in modern.
Glad to see your season reward. It was not bad. When a person works hard and goes to a slightly higher rank, then in the same way it happens that the teams that are there become very difficult and the person then returns to the same place, but the person should not lose heart. Day Man is definitely successful.
The man who plays every day is successful? Or the Day Man who plays on the last day of the season?
I think the person who plays daily will be successful but the little problem is that when one is losing more then one keeps playing which causes the rank to go down.
You are doing very well, You need to buy some new packs to get new cards to have equallent fight with newbies. You are getting older :P

Best of luck for a potentially earlier reaching the Diamond League.
An interesting fact would be analyzing what brought you to this result, so to try this same result also in the next session/season/month.
Like in a start-up/new business we do the SWAT analysis, you can do the same in order to also maximize profits :D
Very interesting, it is very detailed contrasting with previous seasons and you can see the progress.
I'm glad to hear that you're still enjoying the game. I agree that the community ownership model is a great way to build a sustainable game. It's also true that the success of a game can be determined by a variety of factors, including the overall economic climate.
I think it's too early to say whether there will be a lot of demand for the Rebellion edition. It's possible that the playerbase is waiting to see what happens with Land 1.5, or that they're simply tapped out of funds. It's also possible that the crypto market will rebound and people will start investing in NFT games again.
I'm sure... like everyone, I'm so curious about the future of crypto. I think in the past, the big money has followed the shiniest, newest thing; coins, NFTs, Memecoins, Socialcoins, and so I do think that the next crypto bull run will probably be centered on a brand new driver, probably some AI/blockchain project... or potentially crypto might might not get the attention of retail investors again. It's so hard to say... but I hope whatever happens that Splinterlands still manages to carve out some attention, because spending money in Splinterlands is likely to be a better investment then spending money in, say, Fortnite, but that can only be true if enough people are interested in Splinterlands.
