Guild: Shield of Glory

Guild: Shield of Glory

I have been playing Splinterlands for a while now, from Dec 2018 to be precise. When you play this game for a bit, soon you will understand, that you don't really play the game alone. You play one-on-one alright (as of now) but you will want to discuss your game with someone, a friend who speaks the same 'language'. This is where the concept of guild originated.

Source: Brawl Release Announcement from March 31, 2021

When I started playing, for the longest of time, I was not part of any guild. Other than some store discount (which can be substantial) or some DEC bonuses (also can be substantial at high levels), there were no real reason :) I hope you can see that I am mocking myself with the previous statement! Simply I was ignorant, and perhaps a touch lazy too. When I finally understood the benefits (financial) in addition to just fellow-feeling, I joinded the guild of Neoxian. A few of my friends were already there so it made sense.

Funk

The Game as a whole was in a funk just before the hostile takeover of the steem blockchain. So during that time, I lost interest in playing and delegated most of my cards to a professional to play for me. Therefore, I left the guild for a bit, as I wasn't really playing much. But, then, when Brawl was launched, as can be seen from the link above, suddenly there is more incentive to co-ordinate and collaborative play, as opposed to just be an army-of-one; I thought about being more active into playing again.

Shield of Glory

I tested the brawl at the QA server at the beginning, but as the brawl was launched, I was not part of any guild. However, with all the changes I became interested in playing by myself again. So I slowly accumulated my broken deck to something playable, but that is besides the point and a different story. About the same time, a person I never knew before, steemitromney, (nah, he is not a steem supporter!) reached out to me and mentioned if I could join Shield of Glory!

image.png

I was hesitant at first, because it was a Level 8 guild at the time, and with my experience and deck I could easily join any Level 10 guild. But, my other friend scrooger was also there, and I heard some good and honest things about the people there. So I said yes.

Downturn and Revival

After I joined, in the beginning, it was not a very active guild. I mean brawls will sometime be unfilled (I was guilty myself multiple times) and quest won't be done. People won't be active on discord. Although Zagor and Sinistry both tried very hard for a while, it was slow. It went to the point that steemitromney one day reached out to all of us and said he is leaving the guild for a more active one.

Maybe that was the trigger or wake up call, I don't really know. But I saw Zagor, who is our guild leader, started cleaning up house. Meaning, he let go inactive players and requested active players to participate in brawls regularly. Slowly but surely that helped. We had lot of active new blood recently, some very good players, Vugtis (started probably very similar time as me)probably our highest ranked player, Xsuilx and Shadowwolf both the active new addition, and I appreciate the amount of effort they put it. Gregory-f, the remaining of the old-guards is still active, so are many others new player.

So recently from the depth of near darkness and mediocrity, Shield of Glory have become the newest Level 10 Guild recently, also we are currently ranked #6 ahead of many long standing experienced guilds. Our brawl performance have improved and we are looking forward to give the top guilds some serious competition.

I am proud of every guild members that we have, and I call Shield of Glory my current home.

FYI: we are looking to recruit new members, please contact Zagor#9032 on discord, who is the guild leader for details

I've always just played the quests and the battle. Never even looked into a guild. Like yourself I was an early adapter but sold up in 2019 when the Steem civil war happened. Since November I have been building my deck from scratch again and have made it to Silver 1. A few more weeks I will be gold iii. Not great but a start. I must check these guilds out a bit more.

Cool post; you capture benefits of community well - and the brawls being the common purpose. I really love being in a guild for this reason, and watch the developing brawls come to their conclusion, particularly when tight.

Also a lot of selfishness in brawls; a lot of guilds have players who enter them, with seemingly no intention to play their battles. In the last few weeks, this has happened twice to my guild, where if that player just turned up, and won like 1/5 of their battles, that would have been enough to come out on top, and instead, leaves us second.

I really like the Splinterlands community, and looking forward to seeing how it continues to build and go from strength to strength.

Well, we are not those guilds ;)

Nope, I guess that's the advantage of a top 10 guild!
Merits make the world go round though, so at lower levels, where we're still fighting to get gladiator cards (I'd kill for a Quora), those acts of not submitting brawls really are unhelpful. I rent cards for brawls, and those rentals also feel a bit wasted.

Anyhows, onwards and upwards.
Have a good one, Tim

Thank you for sharing @azircon! It's always interesting and insightful to read accounts from more experienced players. I've joined an open guild in December. I was really grateful they welcomed me as a new player. So, even if we don't have a store yet (which would help in terms of CP and Merits), I don't see myself looking for another one. Hopefully, we will be able to slowly level-up our store! @tt88

It is often beneficial to join a higher level guild. That said some guild is better than no guild.

The sense of fellowship can't be understated, imo.

We have it all. We have a very unique blend of work and play, such that we have even invested together. I bet we're some kind of unexplainable phenomenon. Like, someday, when the singularity occurs, it will come to light that it all really started In SoG. :D

I was reluctant to join any guild, since I need to be self-motivated in order to complete my current projects and was concerned that I might get too distracted. Then @steemitromney invited me. I didn't know anything about guilds, so I had a few questions. It didn't seem like too heavy of a commitment, so I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did. Shield of Glory is awesome and I honestly appreciate you guys so much. Especially the level of communication and camaraderie. It takes the game to a whole other level. I try to limit my time spent on Splinterlands in order to get work done, but when I do drop in on the Discord server, the conversation is always entertaining and informative. At one point I got an offer from a higher level guild, which I turned down, but they left the offer on the table. It was around the time when @steemitromney traded up for a more active one, and I was curious about the pros and cons, so I asked him about it. He said yeah, the rewards were better, but the sense of community just wasn't there in the same way. I decided I felt good about my decision to stick with S.O.G. And now look where we are! Happy and proud to be part of this guild.
