Proposal and Toxic Behavior on Discord
How to deal with Discord (online) Trolls
If you’ve spent any meaningful time on Discord, you’ve likely encountered them: the shitposters, the derailers, and the outright bad-faith actors whose sole objective is to ruin everyone else's good time. Dealing with online trolling isn't just an annoyance—it can drain your energy and ruin a great community. Whether you're an individual user tired of toxic DMs or a moderator trying to keep your server clean, here is a battle-tested playbook for dealing with Discord trolls effectively.
The Core Rule: Starve the Flame
The absolute most important thing to understand about online trolls is their primary incentive: your attention.
A troll doesn't care if you agree, disagree, argue, or express anger. To them, any emotional response is a win. The moment you reply—even with a witty comeback—you’ve given them exactly what they came for.
Rule #1: Never argue.
Rule #2: Don't quote their messages to call them out.
Rule #3: Treat them like they are completely invisible.
Silence is the single most effective weapon against a troll. When their efforts yield zero reaction, they almost always move on to find an easier target.
Personal Defense: Lock Down Your User Account
You don't need to endure toxic behavior in your inbox or on your feed. Discord gives you solid tools to filter out the noise:
Block without hesitation: Right-click their profile and hit Block. You won't see their messages in shared channels, and they won't be able to DM you. I am active at Splinterlands discord, and this I do a lot, and very effectively.
Close your DMs to strangers: A common troll tactic is jumping into server member lists and spamming DMs. Head to User Settings > Privacy & Safety and toggle off "Allow direct messages from server members."
Turn off friend requests from strangers: In the same privacy menu, limit who can send you friend requests to mutual friends or server members only.
Server Defense: Technical Barriers for Admins & Mods
If you run a server, relying on manual moderation alone will exhaust your team. Set up automated defenses to stop trolls before they can start.
Raise the Verification Level: Go to Server Settings > Safety Setup. Requiring a verified phone number attached to a Discord account cuts out 90% of disposable alt-accounts created solely for trolling.
Leverage AutoMod: Set up Discord’s built-in AutoMod to automatically block common slurs, spam links, and mass mentions (@everyone).
Implement Slowmode: If a channel is being flooded by low-effort spam or arguing, turn on Slowmode (Channel Settings > Permissions/Overview). Forcing a 10 to 30-second delay between messages instantly kills a troll's momentum.
Use Timeout Over Bans for Small Offenses: The Timeout feature gives moderators a quick way to mute someone for 10 minutes or an hour without turning the situation into a dramatic ban event.
Document and Escalate Extreme Behavior
There is a big difference between annoying behavior and actual harassment, threats, or hate speech. When a troll crosses the line into TOS violations:
Take Screenshots: Capture the messages along with timestamps and user tags before the troll can edit or delete them.
Copy Message IDs: Enable Developer Mode in Discord settings so you can right-click and copy specific User and Message IDs.
Report to Discord Trust & Safety: For severe infractions, submit an official report to Discord's Safety team directly through the app or website.
A Splinterlands Proposal turned nasty
Recently Shade run a good proposal regarding limiting how many accounts scholars can run. The details of the proposal is not relevant to this conversation, but what was important to note that very quickly the conversation discord went from divisive to confrontation to outright toxic based on who wants what. It ended up with lot of name calling and that led to me and multiple other stakeholders voting the proposal down. Not that the proposal were particularly bad, I would say it was mostly neutral from my personal point of view. Yet, the way the conversation went due to a handful of bad actors, led me to write this particular post.
General thoughts related to online trolls
Building a healthy online space requires boundary setting. Trolls thrive on chaos and emotional reactions; depriving them of both is how you win. Keep your privacy settings tight, configure your server automation, and remember: don't feed the trolls.
Since I am kids and one is now teenager, I had to educate myself quite a bit on this front. Turns out, my daughter educates me more on this, and she is quite effective. She is not on any conventional social media, and I didn't have to enforce it at all. Sometimes I can call myself lucky.

I didn't realize you spent that much time on Discord. We must not hang out in the same places. I'm guessing you spend most of your time in the Splinterlands Discord. You are always welcome at The Pub.
Thank you, yes, I have been to the Pub, but not frequently enough. SL discord I have to go mostly for governance reasons
It's not as lively as it used to be. The drama over Ray has kind of died down and the markets don't help either. I expect if we ever seem some kind of jump in the markets things will pick up. Seems to be the case all around.
I don't use discord since it's prone to hacks. I have used our own hive dm thing which works fine.

its why i get annoyed over on the splinterlands server... and miss important things, because i log in and see page after page of people having a go at other players rather than talking about the game...
it doesn't bother me, i just move over it all... and don't get involved. Unhappily you get it in most places. The rise of the "keyboard warrior" its easy to say these things online when you don't know the person and thing there are going to be no consequences.
however its annoying as it just takes time to scroll over it and get to things that are important. i love a good debate, differences of opinion are perfectly fine... but respect, respect will always be needed.
Totally agree... not rising to the bait is the best plan if you can.
It's is only a few disgruntled people who does it. Most we given up and quit but some are still around and refuse to go :)

Hello everyone I hope you are all good and well today in this post is some of the evidence to prove my case
If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
