I liked everything in part 1 of that chapter: it was a climax of events and this ending left me with the NEED to know what happens next 🔥

The probes held, held, held. She kept them that way. No more restructuring. Not enough energy. If she let go, the warring outside would come to an end. She needed that war. Uliyah needed that war.

Nice rythm to this paragraph. Really gives out the feeling of time slowing and June retreating in herself.

Frix was confused for a moment, wondering if Atrocity had told this guy about their meeting along the hopjack trail. How he was a moment away from taking the shortsharp to her. Then the voice registered.

A tingling blast caught at her face, tugging at her hair and pulling her clothes. Someone was running along the edge, and she made to knock them over when the probes gave a sickening lurch. She put her power into steadying the damn things, trying to make sure Vik was covered, when another little blast punched into her eyes.

A second vehicle, this one much smaller, came zipping along the wide, flat path that the witches had sliced through the woods. Four figures rode this one. It too floated on a tangle of wavy, swirling legs.“

The crossdart-wielder’s light had faded to pink, and the crossdart was pointing at Frix. He ducked as it fired. The dart ripped through his hair.

This is a perfect depiction of a moment when someone knows the incoming danger at the nick of the time. Awesome

He thought it strange that here he was, seeing the thing he’d been traveling days to find, yet there was no revelation. No answer or ‘aha!’ moment. Perhaps this light wasn’t exactly right. It was big—the structure was enormous to be sure—but it wasn’t the same bigness as before. No, that was only accessible through someone special.
