Dicen que el malvado capitán Pete Two Gun robó las armas que posee, luego de traicionar y asesinar a sus antiguos dueños. Dicen también que posee un alijo secreto de armas que robó a otros capitanes en el pasado. Que los fantasmas de sus antiguos compañeros rondan sus sueños. Pero a él no parece importarle. Viaja con Artibula, una pirata y hechicera ciega, capaz de eliminar los encantamientos protectores de las armas, lo que impedía que alguien indigno como él las usara. No tiene amigos íntimos, pero siempre está en compañía de su rata Squint. Es un personaje malvado lo mires por donde lo mires, pero ¿qué sucede cuando nadie lo ve? ¿Qué es del viejo Pete Two Gun cuando entra en su camarote? ¿Cómo son las noches en que los fantasmas lo visitan? ¿Sufre la culpa como cualquier otro ser humano o simplemente le parece insoportable el tormento?

They say that the evil Captain Pete Two Gun stole the weapons he owns, after betraying and murdering their former owners. They also say that he has a secret cache of weapons he stole from other captains in the past. That the ghosts of his former comrades haunt his dreams. But he doesn't seem to care. He travels with Artibula, a blind pirate and sorceress, capable of removing protective enchantments from weapons, which prevented someone unworthy like him from using them. He has no close friends, but is always in the company of his rat Squint. He's an evil character no matter how you look at him, but what happens when no one sees him? What becomes of old Pete Two Gun when he enters his cabin? What are the nights like when ghosts visit him? Does he suffer from guilt like any other human being or does he just find the torment unbearable?

Saludos, comunidad de Alien Art Hive. Esta semana vengo con otra participación para el Splinterlands Art Contest. En esta ocasión, elegí a Pete Two Gun por lo turbia que resulta su historia. Luego de pensar cómo podía dibujarlo, se me ocurrió hacerlo en su camarote, bebiendo ron, atormentado por los fantasmas de los capitanes a los que traicionó y asesinó.

Ha sido un reto interesante de cumplir. Pero antes de empezar con el proceso, a quienes todavía no lo conocen, los invito a leer un poco más sobre él en la Wiki - Fandom de Splinterlands.

Greetings, Alien Art Hive community. This week I come with another entry for the Splinterlands Art Contest. This time, I chose Pete Two Gun because of how murky his story is. After thinking about how I could draw him, I came up with the idea of drawing him in his cabin, drinking rum, haunted by the ghosts of the captains he betrayed and murdered.

It has been an interesting challenge to meet. But before we start with the process, to those who don't know him yet, I invite you to read a little more about him in the Splinterlands Wiki - Fandom.

Empecé haciendo el boceto a lápiz en una hoja blanca. Esta vez tuve algunos inconvenientes porque mi lápiz 6h se desgastó. Salí a comprar uno y solo conseguí un 2h. Así que los trazos me quedaban más oscuros. Sin embargo, con la idea en mente, dibujé a este personaje sumido en la bebida, como si estuviera intentando olvidar las atrocidades que hizo. La imagen debía generar una sensación de tristeza y arrepentimiento. Ese era el objetivo. Luego remarqué el dibujo con bolígrafo negro.

I started by sketching in pencil on a white sheet of paper. This time I had some inconveniences because my 6h pencil wore out. I went out to buy one and I only got a 2h. So the strokes were darker. However, with the idea in mind, I drew this character immersed in drink, as if he was trying to forget the atrocities he did. The image had to generate a sense of sadness and regret. That was the goal. Then I outlined the drawing with black pen.

Una vez digitalizado el boceto, comencé a editar en Photoshop. A medida que coloreaba, iba agregando detalles al boceto que se me habían olvidado y borrando trazos demasiado sucios o gruesos. Tras colorear, trabajé en la botella de ron y el vaso. La idea era que ambos tuvieran algo de transparencia y pudiera verse el brazo de este personaje. Este proceso lo hice en capas diferentes para poder aplicar el modo de capa multiplicar.

Once the sketch was digitized, I started editing in Photoshop. As I colored, I added details to the sketch that I had forgotten and erased strokes that were too dirty or too thick. After coloring, I worked on the rum bottle and the glass. The idea was that both had some transparency and the arm of this character could be seen. I did this process in different layers in order to be able to apply the multiply layer mode.

Después trabajé en los fantasmas de la misma forma que lo hice con el vaso y la botella, pero en vez de utilizar multiplicar para las capas, utilicé una luz fuerte y apliqué un desenfoqué de movimiento. Jugué con la opacidad de las capas y conseguí un resultado que no me gustó mucho pero al menos se acercó a lo que quería.

Then I worked on the ghosts in the same way I did with the glass and the bottle, but instead of using multiply for the layers, I used a strong light and applied a motion blur. I played with the opacity of the layers and got a result that I didn't really like but at least it was close to what I wanted.

Durante el proceso de aplicar luces y sombras, demoré más de lo que pensaba, intentando dar profundidad al personaje y analizando de dónde provenía la luz y en qué parte podían generarse sombras más oscuras que otras. Me falta mucha práctica en esta área (en el dibujo en general), pero aprendo de forma empírica, así que espero mejorar con el tiempo.

Tanto para las sombras como las luces, utilicé la herramienta pluma. Ahora siento que hace mucho más fácil este proceso. Sin embargo, en algunas partes, luego de aplicar la luz, usé un borrador difuminado para que se viera más uniforme y natural. Primero trabajé en la sombra y el brillo de los ojos y después en todo el dibujo.

During the process of applying lights and shadows, I took longer than I thought, trying to give depth to the character and analyzing where the light was coming from and in which part could generate darker shadows than others. I lack a lot of practice in this area (in drawing in general), but I learn empirically, so I hope to improve with time.

For both shadows and highlights, I used the pen tool. Now I feel it makes this process much easier. However, in some parts, after applying the light, I used a blurred eraser to make it look more even and natural. I first worked on the shadow and the glow of the eyes and then on the whole drawing.

Fondo mejorado / Improved background

Para las tablas del fondo del camarote, usé el filtro granulado en otra capa. Tuve que recortar todo el fondo y trabajar con eso. Después coloqué la capa en multiplicar, reduje la opacidad a la mitad y borré las imperfecciones que habían quedado tras el corte.

Por último, ajusté los niveles de color y subí un poco la saturación general del dibujo. Empecé con todo este proceso ayer a las 5:00 p. m. y terminé casi a medianoche. El dibujo lo hice el miércoles, pero no había podido sentarme a editarlo. He disfrutado bastante hacerlo. Ahora cuando lo veo siento pena por el capitán. Es una imagen triste la que ha resultado de todo esto. ¿Puede alguien tan malvado llegar a sentirse así? Lo dudo. Pero igual ha sido un buen experimento. Nos vemos en otra próxima participación.

For the bottom boards of the cabin, I used the grainy filter on another layer. I had to cut out the whole background and work with that. Then I set the layer to multiply, reduced the opacity by half and erased the imperfections that were left after cropping.

Finally, I adjusted the color levels and raised the overall saturation of the drawing a bit. I started this whole process yesterday at 5:00 p.m. and finished at almost midnight. The drawing was done on Wednesday, but I hadn't been able to sit down and edit it. I've quite enjoyed doing it. Now when I look at it I feel sorry for the captain. It's a sad picture that has come out of all this. Can someone so evil come to feel that way? I doubt it. But it was still a good experiment. See you next time.
