Battle Mage Secrets, Weekly Challenge, Back to Basics!

Coming in with the next challenge! The Battle Mage Secrets is a great challenge showing the rules for getting into the game, you should join us if you are not already playing! I do have to give the Splinterlands staff some credit, the images they are finding for this is amazing, I love the Panda in the background on this one! Incase you are wondering, the name is Lilly for the Panda, check out the Lore for one of Splinterlands summoners if you want to know more!

First, let’s talk about this ruleset, Back to Basics, I am not a really big fan of this ruleset, it changes things a lot in the battle, which I am okay with, but it takes away the abilities, which is a lot of fun for me. However, it does make you think, fitting in the best monsters with the best chance to win, while being basic.

The battle that we are examining for this one is a high-level mana cap at 54 plus:
Lost Legendaries: Legendary Monsters may not be used in battles.
Back to Basics: Monsters lose all abilities.
Unprotected: Monsters do not have any armor and do not get armor from Abilities or Summoner Buffs.

An interesting ruleset to say the least, lost legendaries means that the big boys will not be out to play, then unprotected is taking away that armor that usually helps out a lot from the back to basics ruleset, so I will be looking for monsters with high health to win this one.

First up, the Summoner:

I use Obsidian a lot with the back to basic rulesets, having that extra magic damage helps a lot to get around shields when dealing with the basic, this time though, I didn’t have to worry about the shields, but having that extra magic was a good thing!

The front line was the Terraceous Grunt:

Six mana is not a bad cost on this one, but I was looking at the 11 health, that was a big thing for me, which becomes a standard in this fight.

Next was Arkemis:

This is a high-cost common card, but in this case, I was looking for that health, but the 3 melee damage is nice as well, I put him in the second spot so that after the first one goes down I will be hitting harder for a little longer.

This one was my third in line with 11 health, but that 3 magic damage is what I was looking at for the strong suit here, taking some hits but in the third spot, killing it with the magic!

The last 11 health in the line:

I do love this gladius card, since this was a brawl I get one gladiator card for free, Quora is an ideal fit, most people would put them earlier in the line up but I put her here for a reason, 3 magic damage hurts a lot, and by the time this fight gets lower on monsters, when she comes in giving me that boost of melee, will help a lot to take them down.

More Magic

Another high magic damage, less health at 5, but hitting that magic for awhile at this point.

The last card was surprise, magic

Slower speed with 4 health, but the 3 magic damage, always great to have on this one, all the way at the back to do the damage for a longer period of time.

So, my initial thoughts on this one, I wanted to make sure that I would be hitting things and doing the damage, the nice thing about magic is that it will always hit, unless they have the ability Phase, but with back to basics, that doesn’t fit into the puzzle at all. Then I wanted high health as well, so the monsters can stay alive longer while the magic keeps hitting.

My strategy worked, even though they made a mistake, they put their ranged attacks in the middle, both of those monsters have close ranged normally, so that wouldn’t be an issue, but with back to basics, that nullifies it, something they forgot when choosing their team. The high health and high magic damage came out in the lead for me!

Things to keep in mind with the Back to Basics ruleset:
• High health is your friend, keeps people in the fight longer
• Magic is great, ranged and it slips through most defenses
• High armor count works well most of the time, depends upon the ruleset
• Have a summoner that adds to the abilities, since it is the only abilities you will have
