Battle Mage Secrets, Weekly Challenge, Broken Arrows!

Coming in with the next challenge! The Battle Mage Secrets is out and about, changed things up a little bit for me, but that is good, but it tries me on a new level and gives me some new challenges to win! We are coming in with something that makes archers cry, the broken arrow, I guess that would be true for hunters as well.

First, let’s talk about this ruleset, Broken Arrows changes the dynamic of the fight a lot, no ranged monsters in the fight at all, so that means it takes away roughly a third of the choices that you have, you really need to focus on Magic and Melee to win these fights, maybe that is why the image for this week is the summoner on fire!

The battle that we are examining for this one is a mid/high-level mana cap at 45 plus:

Broken Arrows: Ranged attack Monsters may not be used in battles.
Fog of War: Monsters lose the Sneak, Snipe and Opportunity abilities.
Are You Not Entertained?: One additional Gladiator card may be used in battles.

An interesting ruleset to say the least, the fog of war limits what monsters will be good in this situation, you really need to focus on the front, but then having a gladiator in the mix, was a great thing and caused me to win! The other element here, only Water and Light were allowed, limiting some choices
Here is the quick link to the battle, from the Gold Modern Division: (Link however, I will break it down, then you might want to watch again.

First up, the Summoner:

I love this summoner, the boost to speed and giving everyone armor, it fits into so many lineups! The armor was a nice addition to the fight, stacking more, but I also needed to have a way to get around the extra armor, hence the speed.

The front line was the Baakjira:

A couple of things on this one, I know they would be hitting the front line, and if they wanted more than two attacks they were using magic, so having void here, means those attacks are diminished, then having slow, means that the enemy will be moving after me, so I can slip in and take them out quickly. The large health pool, means Baakjira will stay alive longer.

Next up is a card was to get some damage in and some survivability:

Good damage on this one, decent speed, looking for that reach ability to keep on hitting them up front, important.

Next was Djinn Oshannus:

Many times, when I am running Water I use Oshannus up front because of the high health and the speed, which is great, but having Void, where it reduces magic attacks, along with Phase, which means that magic attacks can miss him, it creates a powerful tank. In this case, the third spot for tanking, hoping that the other two will live awhile, but then by the time Oshannus gets up front, probably magic damage will be left.

In the third spot spot Nerissa, that magic hit, but when Oshanus goes down, a good amount of health which means she will stick around for awhile, while doing a decent amount of damage.

The next card is one of the key’s in this fight.

Lowest health on the team, but the tank heal will help to keep those cards ahead of it alive longer, with no sneak and snipe, I only have to worry about scatter shot.

The last card was for more damage than anything else:

A newer card of mine, but I really do like it, and I was only able to use it due to the Are You Not Entertained ruleset! Starting off not too many great things with the stats, however, the abilities, blast, means it will not only hit the front line, but also hit the next in line, creating a tumble effect, but then if Flagulon takes a monster out, bloodlust means those stats increase each time.

So, my initial thoughts on this one, I know that damage will be focused on the front, I can only use melee and magic, with Broken Arrows I know there will be magic damage, so I needed to make sure that I could mitigate that a little bit, hence the void and the heals. Then I needed to dish out some damage, well I wanted to avoid most of the shields, so I went magic on this one.

My strategy worked, even though they had heal and armor repair I was able to do enough damage to take them down. A mistake they made was having a monster that normally has sneak, not able to attack due to the ruleset, so that always helps. Taking away a lot of the magic damage also helped with void, a great win for me!

Things to keep in mind with the Broken Arrow ruleset:
• You lose a third of your choices, make sure you damage with what you have
• Magic is great, ranged and it slips through most defenses
• Abilities are key, reach, snipe, sneak, opportunity, all great choices
• Magic is there, Void and Phase can become your friends, less magic damage too you
