Battle Mage Secrets, Weekly Challenge, Earthquake, better start Flying!

Coming in with the next challenge! The Battle Mage Secrets is out and about, changed things up a little bit for me, but that is good, but it tries me on a new level and gives me some new challenges to win! We are coming in hot with the Earthquake ruleset, hence why you need to start flying!

First, let’s talk about this ruleset, Earthquake, every monster on the ground is going to be taking hits at the end of every round, high health does help, high shields helps as well, through in flight and you are golden!

The battle that we are examining for this one is a mid-level mana cap at 35 plus:

Earthquake: Non-flying Monsters take 2 Melee damage at the end of each round.
Counterspell: All Monsters have the Magic Reflect ability.
Aimless: All Monsters have the Scattershot ability.

This works out decently well, the tricky part is that only Water and Earth was allowed for this fight, scattershot can get weird with your ranged people, if they use magic it will reflect back at them.
Here is the quick link to the battle, from the Gold Modern league: (Link however, I will break it down, then you might want to watch again.

First up, the Summoner:

I love this summoner, the boost to speed and giving everyone armor, it fits into so many lineups! The armor was a nice addition to the fight since it will help my monsters last longer due to earthquake.

The front line was the Djinn Oshannus:

Many times, when I am running Water I use Oshannus up front because of the high health and the speed, which is great, but having Void, where it reduces magic attacks, along with Phase, which means that magic attacks can miss him, it creates a powerful tank. In this case, with the counterspell, as long as the enemy doesn’t have amplify, he can do magic damage, missing the shields but then when it comes back he takes no damage due to the void, a nice trick. The health means he will stick around for a little while with the ruleset, allowing the other team to take some hits.

A nice reward card in this spot, a secondary tank for me, but the flight and the void is what I was looking at, knowing that Oshannus will be going down, having him in as backup, with full health and shields, a great thing!

With the Earthquake ruleset I use this one a lot as the off tank, the 3 ranged damage is nice, but the flight means they will live longer than with the close range ability it will still do damage even when it gets to the front line..

This is an older reward card that I use a lot, 2 melee, 4 speed, and sneak attack, oh, don’t forget flight in there as well, means it will be hitting that backline to knock them down.

This was an important card to the fight, the 3 damage is nice, but it was more the armor repair is what I was going for, either keeping the tank alive longer or keeping itself in the game.

Lastly is a nice Chaos Legion card:

So this is a 0 mana card, a great thing to have, but I put him in the back, knowing that max it will live will be 2 rounds due to the earthquake, but it can still take a hit or two if they have sneak attack, keeping my other monsters alive longer.

So, my initial thoughts on this one, I know that half my team will be taking damage every round, if they use magic, just incase they forget, I have void up front with oshannus, who can bypass the shields with his magic and not take damage. I have the armor repair to keep my monsters alive longer, plus a sneak attack to ding that back row.

Everything worked as intended on this one! The enemy chose taunt up front, but that scattershot, didn’t make a difference with the taunt, it did mean that my sneak was hitting the front first. The scattershot took out my devil kind of early, but the Swamp Spitter and the armor repair just kept it in the game all the time. This was a solid win for me!

Things to keep in mind with the Earthquake ruleset:
• Don’t be afraid to have high health on the ground for good damage
• Look for a flying team, it just negates the rule
• Armor repair works well, take away the armor from the other team is good as well
• Have a monster with Shield, then it is only 1 damage a round instead of 2
