Splinterland Staff Reduction and Reorganization: Thoughts and Considerations
Two days ago Splinterlands published a post in which it announced several major changes affecting staff, company structure, and future goals.

Today I share some of my thoughts on the changes announced by Splinterlands.
Staff reduction is obviously and always not good news for any project because having less staff is equivalent to distributing an equal workload over a smaller number of people who will consequently have more work to do and less time available for each task.
I don't know how much this staff reduction will affect the operational part of Splinterlands because I don't know how many and which staff members are gone.
It is also true, however, that when the general market conditions in the crypto world are as they are now and that is a very long Bear Market in terms of time, not limiting expenses or not adapting them to the economic situation is definitely the worst choice to make.
If the staff reduction can be considered a negative sign the other announcements regarding the restructuring and future goals set by Splinterlands are to me positive signs.
The first interesting and in my opinion positive news concerns the division of Splinterlands and non-Splinterlands projects between @yabapmatt and @aggroed because having a narrow scope of focus on a single project is always better than working on many projects together:
- yabapmatt will focus exclusively on Splinterlands and Soulkepp
- aggroed will take care of non-Splinterlands projects such as Invennium, Genesis League Sports.
But the most positive change in my opinion is the change of focus from short-term to long-term.
If Splinterlands after 5 years of its creation is still one of the most popular and played blockchain-based games it's because the Splinterlands team did an excellent job and better than many other blockchain game projects of which many are no longer around or continue to exist out of inertia with few active players.
But of course mistakes have been made as well but as a famous saying in my country goes: those who don't work don't make mistakes!
I always like those who are not afraid to acknowledge their mistakes and show them because mistakes always teach something and are always an important step to grow and improve.
In my opinion, the biggest mistake Splinterlands made was tolerating bots for too long. In fact, the choice to allow bots in a game may bring benefits in the short or very short term but then it always produces devastating effects because bots drive away real players who enjoy the game and want to play against real players and not against bots.
I have repeatedly shared my negative opinion about allowing the use of bots and I will not prolong it in this post as well but if you like you can read the following two posts that I published some time ago and will continue to share often in my posts on Splinterlands until bots are completely eliminated from Splinterlands.

In my opinion it was also a bad choice to put 15 million packs of cards of the Chaos Legion collection on sale, a choice that was partially corrected at a later date with the daily progressive burning of unsold packs.
The biggest and most interesting news announced by Splinterlands in his post is in my opinion the change that may affect the future release of the Rebellion card set.
This is really a very interesting change that highly raises the level of decentralization of Splinterlands.
How many blockchain-based games do you know with an SPS DAO system like Splinterlands?
I play on more than 12 blockchain-based games but none are as structured and full-featured as Splinterlands and none have a player community like Splinterlands and especially in none of these games is there a proposal system like on Splinterlands where players can have a say in future decisions.
In the landscape of web 3.0 games there are so many idle games, so many idle incremental games, so many farming games but there are few Player Vs Player games that have gameplay at their base and Splinterlands belongs to this small circle of web 3.0 games.
If Splinterlands is still alive more than 5 years after its inception it is because at its base it has an NFT-based strategy game that is fun to play or at least it is fun for me.
I continue to play on Splinterlands because:
- I enjoy playing the battles of Splinterlands.
- I enjoy optimizing my card collection by selling cards I don't use in battle to buy cards that might make my win rate improve
I am not a financial advisor and my personal choices are never financial advice but I on Splinterlands continue to follow my simple gamer instincts.
If I enjoy playing I will continue to do so and I will also continue to have growth goals within the game.
By the way, if on Splinterlands I enjoy playing and always find a challenger in the Modern Format where there are no more bots this means that other players enjoy it as much as I do and it means that there is still value and potential in Splinterlands even though it has been 5 years since its inception and perhaps especially because it has been 5 years since its inception.
Splinterlands' recent announcement about staff reduction has produced negative effects on the market value of some Splinterlands assets such as DEC tokens or SPS tokens.
Rather than the accumulation of DEC tokens that may increase in value when Splinterlands phase 1.5 starts I continue to be much more focused on the cards I use in battle and especially the SPS tokens.
On Splinterlands I have continuously tried to improve the battle strength of my card collection and the positive effects I am seeing season after season especially in terms of seasonal SPS tokens earned.
In the current season, I have for the first time exceeded an amount of 500 SPS tokens earned in a season through my battle victories, and the season is not over yet.
I have long since set an accumulation goal for SPS tokens: 100K SPS staked.
I have almost reached 70% of my accumulation goal because I have 69458 SPS staked.
SPS tokens will acquire new use cases when the Soulkeep game is released because they will be indispensable for receiving in-game rewards.
After the announcement of the probalible selling mechanism of the Rebellion cardset, I am even more convinced of my choice to focus mainly on the accumulation of SPS tokens.
Furthermore, I would like to have more and more decision-making weight in decisions about the future of Splinterlands, and who knows, in the future I may have the resources to make a proposal to completely eliminate bots from my favorite blockchain game as has happened in the past to eliminate bots from Modern Format, tournaments, and Brawls.
If Splinterlands has decided to focus on long-term goals and long-term sustainability I am very happy with this decision.
In my opinion, the future prospects of Splinterlands will depend a lot:
- on the focus that Splinterlands will have toward its player base
- on improving the gameplay and play experience of real players and new players
- on future choices toward bots and automations which in my opinion should be completely eliminated from a PvP game as beautiful as Splinterlands.
I don't have the ability to predict the future and everything could happen in the future but I see the change in vision of the Splinterlands team in a very positive way and for that reason I will continue to set growth goals on Splinterlands, continue to increase the battle strength of my card collection, and look forward with much excitement to the start of phase 1.5 of lands and the fully playable versions of Genesis League Soccer and Soulkeep that will expand the Splinterlands ecosystem**

Oggi condivido alcune mie considerazioni sui cambiamenti annunciati da Splinterlands.
La riduzione dello staff è ovviamente e sempre una notizia non positiva per qualunque progetto perchè avere meno staff equivale a distribuire un carico di lavoro uguale su un numero minore di persone che avranno conseguentemente più lavoro da fare e meno tempo disponibile.
Non so quanto questa riduzione dello staff potrà influire sulla parte operativa di Splinterlands perchè non so quanti e quali membri dello staff non ci sono più.
E' anche vero però che quando le condizioni del mercato generale del mondo crypto sono quelle attuali e cioè un Bear Market molto lungo in termini di tempo, non limitare le spese o non adattarle alla situazione economica è decisamente la scelta peggiore da fare.
Se la riduzione dello staff può essere considerata un segnale negativo gli altri annunci riguardanti la ristrutturazione e gli obiettivi futuri fissati da Splinterlands sono per me dei segnali positivi.
La prima novità interessante e secondo me positiva riguarda la divisione dei progetti Splinterlands e non-splinterlands tra yabapmatt e aggroed perchè avere un ambito di focus ristretto su un singolo progetto è sempre meglio che occuparsi di molti progetti insieme:
- yabapmatt si occuperà esclusivamente di Splinterlands e Soulkepp
- aggroed si occuperà dei progetti non-Splinterlands come ad esempio Invennium, Genesis League Sports.
Ma il cambiamento più positivo secondo me è il cambiamento di focus dal breve termine al lungo termine.
Se Splinterlands dopo 5 anni dalla sua nascita è ancora uno dei giochi basati su blockchain più famosi e giocati è perchè il team di Splinterlands ha fatto un lavoro eccellente e migliore di tanti altri progetti di giochi blockchain di cui molti non ci sono più o continuano ad esistere per inerzia con pochi giocatori attivi.
Ma ovviamente sono stati fatti anche degli errori ma a me piace sempre chi non ha paura di riconoscere i propri errori e di mostrarli perchè gli errori insegnano sempre qualcosa e sono sempre un passo importante per crescere e migliorare.
Secondo me l'errore più grande che ha fatto Splinterlands è stato quello di tollerare i bots per troppo tempo. Infatti la scelta di consentire l'uso dei bots in un gioco può portare vantaggi nel breve o brevissimo periodo ma poi produce sempre effetti devastanti perchè i bots allontanano i giocatori reali che si divertono a giocare e vogliono giocare contro giocatori reali e non contro bots.
Ho più volte condiviso la mia opinione negativa sul consentire l'utilizzo dei bots e non mi dilungherò anche in questo post ma se hai piacere puoi leggere i seguenti due post che ho pubblicato tempo fa e che continuerò a condividere spesso nei mie post su Splinterlands fino a quando i bots non saranno eliminati completamente da Splinterlands.

Secondo me è stata una scelta sbagliata anche quella di mettere in vendita 15 milioni di pacchi di carte della collezione Chaos Legion, scelta corretta parzialmente in un secondo momento con la bruciatura progressiva giornaliera dei pacchi non venduti.
La più grande e interessante novità annunciata da Splinterlands nel suo post è secondo me il cambiamento che potrebbe riguardare il futuro rilascio del set di carte Rebellion.
Questo è davvero un cambiamento molto interessante che innalza enormemente il livello di decentralizzazione di Splinterlands.
Quanti giochi basati su blockchain conosci che hanno un sistema SPS DAO come Splinterlands?
Gioco su più di 12 giochi basati su blockchain ma nessuno è strutturato e completo come Splinterlands e nessuno ha una comunità di giocatori come quella di Splinterlands e soprattutto in nessuno di questi giochi c'è un sistema di proposte come su Splinterlands dove i giocatori possono avere un peso nelle decisioni future.
Nel panorama di giochi web 3.0 ci sono tanti idle games, tanti idle incremental games, tanti farming games ma ci sono pochi giochi Player Vs Player che hanno un gameplay alla base e Splinterlands appartiene a questa ristretta cerchia di giochi web 3.0.
Se Splinterlands è ancora in vita dopo più di 5 anni dalla sua nascita è perchè alla base ha un gioco di strategia basato su NFT che è divertente da giocare.
Io continuo a giocare su Splinterlands perchè:
- mi diverto a giocare le battaglie di Splinterlands
- mi diverto a ottimizzare la mia collezione di carte vendendo le carte che non uso in battaglia per acquistare carte che potrebbero fare migliorare il mio win rate
Non sono un consulente finanziario e le mie personali scelte non sono mai consigli finanziari ma io su Splinterlands continuo a seguire il mio semplice istinto da giocatore.
Se giocare mi diverte continuerò a farlo e continuerò anche ad avere obiettivi di crescita all'interno del gioco.
Tra l'altro se su Splinterlands mi diverto a giocare e trovo sempre uno sfidante nel Modern Format dove non ci sono più i bots questo vuol dire che anche altri giocatori si divertono come me e vuol dire che c'è ancora valore e potenziale in Splinterlands anche se sono passati 5 anni dalla sua nascita e forse soprattutto perchè sono passati 5 anni dalla sua nascita.
Il recente annuncio di Splinterlands sulla riduzione dello staff ha prodotto degli effetti negativi sul valore di mercato di alcuni assets di Splinterlands come i token DEC o i token SPS.
Più che sull'accumulo dei token DEC che potrebbero aumentare di valore quando la fase 1.5 delle land inizierà io continuo ad essere molto più focalizzato sulle carte che uso in battaglia e soprattuto sui token SPS.
Su Splinterlands ho continuamente cercato di migliorare la forza in battaglia della mia collezione di carte e gli effetti positivi li sto vedendo stagione dopo stagione soprattutto per quanto riguarda i token SPS stagionali guadagnati.
Nella stagione in corso ho per la prima volta superato un quantitativo di 500 token SPS guadagnato in una stagione grazie alle mie vittorie in battaglia e la stagione non è ancora terminata.
Ho da tempo fissato un obiettivo di accumulo per i token SPS: 100K SPS staked.
Ho quasi raggiunto il 70% del mio obiettivo di accumulo perchè ho 69458 SPS staked.
I token SPS acquisiranno nuovi casi d'uso quando sarà rilasciato il gioco Soulkeep perchè saranno indispensabili per ricevere le ricompense di gioco.
Dopo l'annuncio del probalible meccanismo di vendita del cards set Rebellion sono ancora più convinto della mia scelta di focalizzarmi principalmente sull'accumulo dei token SPS.
Inoltre mi piacerebbe avere un peso decisionale sempre maggiore nelle decisioni sul futuro di Splinterlands e chissà che in futuro non riesca ad avere le risorse necessarie per fare una proposta per eliminare completamente i bots dal mio gioco blockchain preferito come è avvenuto in passato per eliminare i bots dal Modern Format, dai tornei e dalle Brawls.
Se Splinterlands ha deciso di puntare su obiettivi di lungo termine e su una sostenibilità nel lungo termine sono molto contento di questa decisione.
Secondo me le prospettive future di Splinterlands dipenderanno molto:
- dal focus che Splinterlands avrà verso la sua base di giocatori
- dal miglioramento dell'esperienza di gioco e ludica dei giocatori reali e dei nuovi giocatori
- dalle future scelte verso bots e automazioni che secondo me dovrebbero essere completamente eliminati da un gioco PvP bello come Splinterlands.
Non ho la capacità di prevedere il futuro e tutto potrebbe succedere in futuro ma vedo in modo molto positivo il cambio di visione del team di Splinterlands e per questo motivo continuerò a pormi obiettivi di crescita su Splinterlands, continuerò ad aumentare la forza in battaglia della mia collezione di carte e aspetto con molta eccitazione l'inizio della fase 1.5 delle lands e le versioni completamente giocabili di Genesis League Soccer e Soulkeep che espanderanno l'ecosistema di Splinterlands**

I can understand why people are upset and some are packing up and leaving. However that feels like more of an emotional decision over hearing what's actully taking place. What's FINALLY taking place is getting shiz done. The team was HUGE and to be honest there was very little being produced and going out. Marketing was totally worthless and an expense. The best marketing you're going to get is creating a hell of a game, new assets, new gameplay options and then your player base promoting it and getting others in on it. That's what made Splinterlands so dang strong and it feels like that's what we are returning to. There's also NO reason why Splinterlands shouldn't be making a ton of money. Just interest and fees alone if managed correctly that would be swimming in extra income by now. Instead to me it feels like it got pissed away for the last year or year and a half.
My hopes are we now get to a point where not only does the company become profitable and not have to worry about things but also through sponsors etc as it grows that the value gets injected into the game through SPS or something as the economy in game and profitability there is just as important.

Comunque penso ci vorrà un bel pò di tempo prima del il rilascio del set Rebellion anche perchè nella scala di priorità di yabapmat ci sono prima le lands e poi c'è Rebellion.
Considera anche che prima del rilascio del nuovo set ci sarà una proposta da presentare e votare e solo per quella penso che ci vorrà un mese, se poi ci metti anche tutto il tempo per promuovere il set...penso ci vorranno diversi mesi

Great points. Chaos legion was massively overprinted. Also, I think the splinterlands team should focus more on a few goals. Just take a look at land and see how long that took to release. I hope the changes work out for the best and I do think it does make things more decentralized.

Of course, this thing is not good, but we all know that when the market is running, it becomes difficult, if not impossible, to meet the expenses, so maybe that's why they have expelled some people from here. i really liked this post. I'll be following you from now on for more splinterlands insight!
Im personally excited about having matt at the helm. The ambition was a bit too confusing at times and Im glad I didnt get swept up too much in to the other games that are being created. I cant focus like you on 12 different crypto games.... ONE is complex enough for me, and Splinterlands has always scratched the itch. It is such an exciting and vibrant community to be a part of, and people moan all the time, but development has always continued and progress is always happening. That keeps the drama alive for me, and even if it is a bit of a soap opera, I still want to be here playing and listening and contributing though good times and bad. There is nothing better!

InfoAnche se ridurre il proprio organico è ovviamente una scelta moralmente triste, sarebbe sicuramente ancora peggio far andare a fondo l'intero progetto cercando di mantenere invariata una situazione ormai insostenibile: come hai giustamente detto te, saper riconoscere i propri errori è un simbolo di intelligenza e coraggio, per cui apprezzo molto quando un team si assume le sue responsabilità e continua ad essere trasparente con i suoi utenti. Personalmente per me hanno ragionato davvero troppo a lungo con una visione short-term, approfittando eccessivamente di tutti gli effetti positivi dell'ultimo bull market, salvo poi trovarsi in forte difficoltà quando utenti e soldi hanno smesso di piovere "dal cielo"... ma nonostante tutto ciò continuo a pensare che Splinterlands abbia dei punti di forza unici nell'intero panorama del gaming, anche rispetto a blasonsti giochi del web 2.0, e uno stato di sviluppo estremamente avanzato, a differenza di quasi ogni altro gioco del web 3.0, dove la parola "beta" ormai sembra una scusa per non far mai uscire la versione definitiva di un gioco. Per cui, per quanto molto in piccolo, continuo a cercare di accrescere i miei assets e a non tirare fuori nemmeno un centesimo da SPL. Speriamo che con il tempo tutto ciò dia i suoi frutti :)
