Window of Opportunity

I no longer pay too much attention on Splinterlands updates for which they recently released a new rewards system via the glint shop (i.e. loot chests via the glint shop). Not until an official announcement came from the Splinterlands discord saying they will be reconfiguring their formula on the rewards.

Earlier during the day, I was randomly reading in various communities where players were able to pull Beta packs, plots and even much coveted titles. These are very rare items never been seen in recent chest rewards; hence, also named as "Jackpot Prize". Ever since the rewards chests revamp to glint shop, I've left my glints untouched because I was unsure what to do with it. The discord announcement was the sign: Looks like a Good Deal.

Looking at my upcoming End-of-Season glint earnings: ~ 90,000. I decided to spend around 100k glint for an equivalent 40 Ultimate chests. Despite the announcement, I knew that they wouldn't be able to deploy any changes soon (might require a downtime) which means there is still a window of opportunity.

Out of 100k glint spent for 40 Ultimate Chests, I guess the highlight would be getting 1 Beta Pack.
It's unfortunate that ever since the rewards change, splintershare and other dapps can no longer show rewards properly.

I wonder if there would be any other developer who can help visualize previous rewards?

Peakmonsters can only show cards received from pack opening. These are my newest Soulbound Rewards:

Too bad no gold foils nor legendary cards. I was contemplating on opening the Beta pack (tempting); however, looking at the prices of at least a rare Beta card, seems so discounted compared to the value of an unopened Beta pack. I'll just keep it as is and wait until the Beta pack prices normalize. BETA price went down due to the sudden supply of Beta packs, from around 80 Hive down to current of 20 Hive. This is as expected but I consider it as temporary inflation.

The new changes eventually got implemented later around after 30 minutes from the first announcement. Glad I was able to make it on time to buy with the high chance chests. They've basically nerfed the rewards reducing the possibilities by tenfold.

Realizations:

  • Chest system proves to be a good motivator for players as they enjoy looking at their chances of getting a nice pull. In a way, the event was a success as shown by the number of glint burned.
  • The miscalculation of the rewards formula short-lived the intended distribution of the new chest system. We can consider the 'early birds' to be lucky, they were well rewarded this time.
  • A system / project such as creating/maintaining a game like Splinterlands is not all about coding. Someone from the team should be good in analyzing data and they should make proper data-driven decisions. Seems like they dropped the ball on the math part on this one. Hopefully a good lesson for everyone (including Hive in general).

I do like how RoyalEagle present the data on his latest discord message. I hope we can see more sharing of statistics during discussions on Tokenomics, engagement, issues, etc. Let's move towards Data - driven decisions please. Also a lesson to everyone: this is why math is important; let's appreciate. 😎
