Splinterlands Strategies: Land is here, almost, maybe on the 14th?

After waiting THREE and a HALF years, the time is almost upon on for Land. Is everyone celebrating and can't keep themselves contained for Tuesday 14th November?

It depends. As @revisesociology mentioned to me, Land is a rich man's game and I have to agree. I personally know several real-life friends who own just a handful of PLOT. They all bought in during the hype times and are feeling a little disgruntled about Splinterlands today.

For the last few days, I have been tinkering with the much-improved experience on the Mavs server and have loved it. It's like playing a Simulator Management game, only with real 'magic money'.

That's not a derogatory name for crypto, it's magic to me in the sense that just like our beloved banks, more is generated daily but some comes into our own pockets unlike that prehistoric constitution we are forced to accept in the fiat world.

If you have ANY Land, then start preparing now. Cancel the rent if you are a renter if you are using a service such as the excellent @splinterrents, temporarily $deactivate your account.

If you don't, then those delicious Gold Foil Legendary cards you were setting aside with 10,000 Production Points each may just be snapped up by a desperate renter five minutes before the live time.

I suppose I have the advantage of being able to tinker with the 'game engine' before release and apart from one glitch, and a few refresh screen bugs it's looking fantastic and draws you in like a 'real game'.

If you didn’t pre-buy any Grain (like me), then you will need some DEC to get going. Time Crystals are an absolute necessity unless you want to wait days, weeks, or even months to clear even a basic plot.

Didn’t get any in the past? There is a way, although I don’t know where @sylar and the XBot Team are getting them from. I do know it works and I have bought quite a lot in the last day or so.

Currently, Time Crystals are around 72 DEC each, and to clear a basic common plot you will need 150 of them which will cost you a cool 11,200 DEC or around $11 in 'real money'.

That will get your crappy land going, but then you need the monsters, and each of those costs DEC to stake.

Also don’t forget those poor monsters who cleared your land. The ravenous beasts need feeding and refuse to start work unless you do so even if you use Time Crystals.

Speeding up time it seems makes no difference to those voracious animals and you have to hand it to them, they must have at least an ounce of intelligence to demand such payments.

There has been lots of talk about Shard Mines. These are best used on 'Occupied' lands, but your general run-of-the-mill basic land can house them. If you are lucky enough to have an 'Occupied' land then you will positively groan regarding the fee to clear it.

These are the worst types of clearance jobs and can take months if you do it the 'slow' way, or for the paltry fee of 900 Time Crystals (around $81) you can start earning SPS by the hour.

NOTE: If you do it the 'slow way' then the eventual fee will be higher than the costs of Time Crystals, but you can 'pay' with Grain.

Magical Lands are not as bad, but even so don't expect huge yields. The amount of research points earned is pitiful and none of us know what they are for.

@yabapmatt has mentioned on several occasions that earning RP's will be valuable in the later game. I have no reason to doubt him.

He also mentioned that RP's will be a LOT harder to earn later. So I can get 0.2 instead of my current 1.432. Well OK then, we need to have a little faith.

If you have a Keep, then don’t claim your taxes often as there is a levy of 1000 Grain per click. While that seems a lot, the Keep coffers are enormous and it would be wise to ensure they are almost full before grabbing all those ill-gotten tax gains.

In the last few days, I feel I have learned a lot about what's to come. There is going to be a lot of Grain to start with, but it seems EVERYTHING you do needs the stuff.

This is not some quick win or get-rich-quick, I see it as a long-term 'project' and I am enthralled by what I am witnessing.

@yabapmatt tells us 1.5 is kind of boring and basic. If this is fact, then I can't wait to see what's going to happen in the next few months of dribbled updates.

If you have a little cash, grab a 'cheap' PLOT or two, even common ones as they are all good.

The region of ‘Rason Detiir' appears particularly good value with land starting around $29, whereas my regions of Celestine and Briarwood appear more snooty and upper-class with peon plots starting around $60.

Is there going to be slum areas and Beverly Hills ones, I wonder?

The wait for the release of land has taken ages. Me, personally, I am waiting on Soulkeep to pop.

As far as hourly production, does that Shard Mine put out 5742 SPS per hour? That is an insane sum if so. Sorry for asking, not entirely schooled on lands...at all.

Still really decent, though. Dunno what you have to pour into it as far as other resources go, but that payout is like having 500k SPS staked.

Its the Production /Hr, so 5075. Not a lot and not a bad SPS yield. It is common.

Nobody knows, but it's been mentioned in several TH's that it will be a lot harder to get come Land 2.0.

I was wondering how long it's been I thought it was 2 years but you're more spot on with three and a half years which is freakin wild! No wonder the community was getting pretty annoyed with the company myself included. But it's good to finally see we are going to be getting this thing in 4 days. I already blocked out the day for no work and all splinterlands lol

Awesome overhead snap of clearing land and honestly reminds me I need to get in the mav server again here tonight or tomorrow and test things out again. It's a great way to get familiar with everything and hit the ground running and not make very costly mistakes.

I totally agree as well picking up some cheap plots for an every day player could be a good move. Even if you just produce grain I feel like it's going to generate you some type of "passive" income from the game with very minimal work. It also sounds like after 1.5 other features should be coming online fast and I see that sparking a lot of hype by having constant updates for land, battles etc going on and keeping everything fresh instead of so stagnate like it has been for years.

There's not going to be any quick money, though Shard Mines do generate decent SPS (for now). The cost to start them is prohibitive and I won't be parting with a huge amount of TC's to kick start mine (I have 3 occupied).

I feel plots may go down even further after people realise what as sink this is going to be. Too many short term people around, and if new to crypto the long-term mentality takes time to start working.

10,000 PP is nowhere near the top. A CL GF is that amount. GF Alpha's are ridiculous, but how many are left in the world?

Oh crap. I don't have any max leveled legendary cards at all I don't think. I am just going to have to make due with what I have I think. It might end up not being worth my time.

It may be finally here and it is a twist the ecosystem needs. On the other side, the community burned itself to the ground and almost everyone who has any sort of stake in the ecosystem left has a plot. The idea of the price of Bitcoin bringing new participants into the ecosystem, buying spellbooks, and getting involved is not exactly coming to fruition. 2-4 spellbook purchases per day in the middle of a BTC rally is not encouraging.

The priorities once Land 1.5 is released should be clear:

  1. Bringing new people into the ecosystem.
  2. Kicking the bots out once and for all.
  3. Building corporate partnerships (and we're not talking about crypto)

We don't do those things, that virtual land you own has little value to anyone outside of a treehouse of 1,000. We have to make Splinterlands actually applicable to the real world and not some fantastical world where it operates in a vacuum. This "we're not selling out" mentality has not held up very well. Making Splinterlands the easy and fun way to jump into the Web3/crypto space requires compromising the prevailing starving artist mentality that has existed for the past several years.

The marketing and promotion of Splinterlands and Hive has been atrocious at best. The fact that it is still here is both a wonder and a testament to stubbornness and sunk costs.

You have a choice a year from now: A fantastical game that stayed true to itself and has 500-750 in the ecosystem (with a Steem Monsters team of 3 people) OR hundreds of thousands involved in an ecosystem where items produced on land have promotional tie-ins with businesses you're potentially in contact with on a daily or weekly basis?

You make the call. What Splinterlands future do you want? Land 1.5 doesn't matter much if the prevailing mentality rules out. We're raiding the DAO to hire people who would just follow the same course. Maybe I'm wrong, what do I know right? 😏

Oh.. I am with you on these points. I use BOT's, but if they went tomorrow I would very happy.The second stage of selecting monsters, and abilities may prove more troublesome for them, at least short term.

New people is a MUST. The base is dying, and full of hard core veterans (like me). I would prefer otherwise. The game I find stressful to play. I think it's the time limit, I don't do well under pressure.

What's above is from a land perspective. This is a whole new arena, that won't give out a lot short-term. It is a lot of fun though, and Splinterlands lacks that.

  1. If bots were completely banned across the board, how would that change your approach toward Splinterlands and how would you change your asset holding strategy?

  2. Since the game is stressful for you to play, would you ever consider changing your role and focus in the ecosystem if the ecosystem grows? Maybe you just stop playing the card game altogether and focus on other parts of Splinterlands you find less stressful and possibly more enjoyable.

I don't know whether it's truly possible to ban them. In 2019, I used to play manually, using 3 accounts to do the daily quests in 3 sessions (and win a lot). It required a lot less concentration then as there were far less cards. With the complexities now, there's too much to compute in 2 minutes, hence the stress.

Since the game is stressful for you to play, would you ever consider changing your role and focus in the ecosystem if the ecosystem grows? Maybe you just stop playing the card game altogether and focus on other parts of Splinterlands you find less stressful and possibly more enjoyable.

I only play Brawls now, but due to point (1), don't enjoy it so much. With each new expansion, this complexity level worsens and make me want to play less. I would rather sit back, rent out the assets and let someone else take the pain.

Sweet Bejeesus 900 TCs to clear for a shard mine... There is a partial option to speed up I think... might be worth doing...?

There's a partial yes, use as many TC's as you have and then wait the rest out. The grain cost will be enormous but by that time, we will have plenty stockpiled.

Spending $81, to get 8-10SPS per hour? I don't think so.

It doesn't seem worth it when you can build on a regular plot for 10 times less the TC...I guess it all depends on what PP yr workers are.

I think I'll do one straight off, do the math and then see!

If the TCs mean the SPS distribution is limited, might make using them worthwhile, I mean one may as well use the TCs!

There's the 100% multiplier, that's likely a factor! I will start one building (the hard way). Magic is a lot less, will start one of those also.

I guess if you make 90% more than the cost of the TCs in the time it wld otherwise take you to build it then it's worth it.

I was looking at a plot with around 50K PP - wld take 8 days to build so I'd need to make $160 worth of SPS in 8 days to make it worth spending the TCs... that's what.... around 10K SPS in 8 days - probably not very likely.

But the grain is more pricey you say?

Damn...

Maybe drop the Q in mavs it sounds like.. just go sloooow!

Grain will get cheap once it's started to get surplus in everyone's kingdoms. It's a way of extracting money from the game, and that's way most people are looking for.

I'm just using Flauwy's calculator, I dropped the post in Discord - to work out clearing days versus TCs.

I think 'cos TCs are a fixed cost and may come in handy later, it's better to wait to develop those occupied and magic plots - do them slow and pay in grain, I mean what's grain gonna be worth a month after the market opens... maybe 20-30% of the notional fee now?

Grain is going to shoot down. When all these other 'commodities' start appearing, peeps will want them, and convert the grain farms to other 'farms'. Then it may rise again. Producing food might be boring but likely wont add to spell components.

I guess a limiting factor is how expensive it is to feed workers - I mean 50% of the supply has to go back in! At Base PP level at least, it's why I spunked 1/4M DEC on totems, it's the only thing you can easily buy that improves that ratio.... forever! (Forever, for now!).

When I bought 3 Plot on the secondary market, I thought Land was supposed to earn, but we now need even more items to get Land to work for us. Grain, Time Crystals, Staked DEC, a power source, Monsters.

Land isn't the gift that keeps giving, it's more like a money pit.

Dare I consider Splinterlands will introduce ground rent within the next year, chargeable in DEC to get DEC to the magical parity value with the $. So I can work the Land I own.

We are already required to stake DEC to use the Land we own.

I bought Land when it was expensive during the hype, now I need to throw a lot more money at it to get it working for me.

I would have had a nice little DEC nest egg, if they hadn't destroyed the rental market. Renting a lvl 8 standard foil Kelya for just over 17 DEC a day is a disappointment, to say the least.

Acquiring this DEC, will be a real challenge and put me on the back foot compared to all the Whales - yet again.

I have lvl 8 GF Commons and lvl 6 GF Rares that I can't play to their full potential because I don't have enough staked SPS to play efficiently in Gold League. I have to play in Silver I to maximise my returns.

The game is supposed to be play to earn, yet it seems to cost $10 to get 1c a week back. Not really the smartest of investments, but then we are in a deep bear market and the assets I'm accruing may realise a big profit when a bull market returns.

So, like a sap, I'll struggle on trying to eke out the smallest of small rewards in the hope that in 5 years time, I'll have amassed something of value.

Having to buy Time Crystals is a new shock, where am I going to find the DEC to buy them, just so I can start earning with my Land?

You don't. Do it the hard way and let the monsters clear your lands slowly. The eventual fee will be Grain, but if you are patient by the time the first Grain fee is due, the market for that commodity will have slumped and it won't cost a lot to finish off the work.

TC's are for the impatient, like me.

The DEC staking has been known about for some time. With 3 lands, you only 15 monsters total and if not maxxed then the staking cost won't be as high as you would imagine.

lvl 6 GF Rares

These might be good on your lands. Rentals will also be increasing as many peeps are pulling their rents (I have). Less supply, more demand, so make use of that opportunity.

SPL need new blood and with new user experience sucks I have to admit. The game is stressful to play, due to time limitations of submitting teams and increasing it will only fuel BOT algorithms which can compute faster than our brains.

Something needs to be put in place to fool AI, only then will the players come back, the ones who want a 'proper game'.

Thanks for adding a little perspective.

I would like TC for at least one of my lands to get it going, so going to work on that, but it has already wiped out the DEC I was collecting for staking,

I have modest income streams to top my DEC up, but that will be faster than trying to clear the land manually.

I can then use the Grain from this one Plot to hopefully supply the other two.

I have three common land plots and the card that has the highest PP is Daria Dragonscale max level = 6250 PP.
With lands I will finally be able to use my beta cards that I didn't use anymore because I don't like to play with bots in the wild format.
I hope at least the lands will not be bot-friendly otherwise I will quit...

Surely all of us who have been waiting for this for a long time are very excited, but I am very concerned about what you say starting out and it worries me because I feel that it is true "Land is a rich man's game" the barrier to entry is very high at this moment because we know that It's not just about buying the plot, if we don't manage to massify the entrance to the land it can become monotonous, a handful of whales playing with a few hundred malnourished dolphins like me hahaha, but well, time will tell.

we must stay proud to be malnourished dolphins! we cant spend our whole lives wishing we were whales, I want to enjoy my land even though I will be putting only 10k pp on my plots. we can form trading alliances and have humble farmers parties and enjoy our small lives as part of this revolutionary new economy. Remember they need us! And below us will be many minnows who we can support as well so that we are all happy contributing to this awesome game space. I know things could always be better....but I am so tired of wishing for more. Lets celebrate!

Hello @basilmarples , of course I am very proud to be a dolphin, it took me a lot to become one, just as you say we need small fish so that the ecosystem is more dynamic, I think it is important to desire more (improve) what we cannot do is place our happiness in those wishes, the trip is always the most important thing, greetings

Interesting. I couldn't be arsed to read about land until its actually out but this has given me a sweetener and now I am interested. I own one aul rare plot in Jimanji or somewhere like that. Im shouting it three times and Im still in the real world. All this grain and wheat and farming is reminding me of DRIP which did not end well. Was basically a money pool with little ROI. All this talk of DEC and grain and whatever other monetary system means more money for us ejets to put into the game but I for one am fond of a large element of risk / reward.

I am not sure what a single plot will achieve. All you can do is farm for Grain. Having nothing else to support a single plot will render it a one-use project.
