Staff Reductions & Restructuring Announcement

It is with a very heavy heart that I announce that we are once again forced to significantly downsize the Splinterlands organization. The people here are like a family more than like co-workers and most of us are here because we genuinely love the Splinterlands product and want to be a part of it, which makes it extremely sad and difficult to have to let anyone go.

That being said, we have a responsibility to our community and to all stakeholders to manage expenses appropriately so that we can ensure that Splinterlands can always weather the tough times, no matter how long they may last, and that means we sometimes have to make tough decisions.

Many of you reading this will probably feel quite frustrated about the situation and the past decisions that led us here. Please know that I share your frustrations, which is why this announcement is not just about reducing expenses, but also about how the business will be restructured and will operate very differently from how it has in the past to ensure that we not only never end up in this situation again, but that we are well positioned to capitalize on the amazing potential we have in Splinterlands and our other products and partnerships going forward.

Splitting Out Non-Splinterlands Products

First and foremost, all projects and initiatives that are not part of the core Splinterlands product will be split out into a separate entity called Invennium Corp. This includes Genesis League Sports, the Invennium platform, and everything else except Splinterlands and Soulkeep (which is considered to be part of Splinterlands). Invennium Corp. will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Steem Monsters Corp. (the parent company) and will be led by @aggroed.

We feel that there is still a massive opportunity in that part of our business, but having our leadership team splitting their time between Splinterlands and Invennium has led to neither side getting the focus and attention that they need.

Splitting out the organization in this way will allow for each of the companies to have their own separate funds, sources of capital, and leadership teams that can focus their full time and attention on their product lines. I am very much looking forward to seeing @aggroed continue to build out the Invennium platform, the Genesis League Goals game, and unlocking the value of the amazing partnerships and IP deals that are part of that ecosystem for the benefit of everyone involved.

Steem Monsters Corp. (which will operate Splinterlands and Soulkeep) will be led by me, @yabapmatt, going forward. This will ensure that the Splinterlands team is 100% focused only on Splinterlands and directly related products and that all funds taken in from Splinterlands product sales will be used exclusively for the improvement and growth of the Splinterlands game and ecosystem.

Long Term Focus

The way that the Splinterlands organization operates will also change significantly going forward, again to ensure that we do not end up back in this situation and that we are well positioned to grow and unlock the value of this amazing product and community in the future.

Over the past year or so, the company has been prioritizing short-term revenue over long term sustainability with the hopes of buying time until the market recovers and avoiding difficult decisions like the cuts being announced today. I want to assure the community that this will not be the case going forward.

In addition to the significant reduction in expenses, I am going to do whatever it takes to raise investment capital for the business. This will allow us to focus on building a sustainable business with the opportunity for tremendous growth over the long term.

Our roadmap for Splinterlands going forward will be similar to what it has been in the past, with the major focuses listed below. While this restructuring may delay some things in the short term, I am confident that these changes will allow us to be much more streamlined and efficient in getting great products built in the long run.

  1. The Secret of Praetoria Expansion
  2. Rebellion
  3. Attracting and retaining new players
  4. Soulkeep
  5. SPS Validators

Rebellion

Speaking of the Rebellion set - we have a major announcement around how the new set of cards will be sold which we hope will highlight our commitment to building a long term, sustainable ecosystem for Splinterlands.

We plan to propose that the Rebellion set be owned and sold by the SPS DAO rather than the Splinterlands company (similar to Riftwatchers), and in return we will ask that the DAO hire Steem Monsters Corp. to develop and distribute the packs through the Splinterlands game platform. This will mark a major milestone in our long term goal of allowing the player community to not just own the assets in the game - but to actually own the game itself.

In order to do this, I plan to submit an SPS governance proposal in the near future asking the DAO to pay Steem Monsters Corp. $250,000 in USDT/USDC from its treasury to fund the initial development of Rebellion and for the DAO to split all revenue from Rebellion pack sales 50/50 with Steem Monsters Corp. in order to fund the continued development and operation of the Splinterlands game platform going forward. This would mean that half of all Rebellion pack sale proceeds go to the DAO (in DEC) instead of everything going to the Splinterlands company as has been the case in the past.

As you can imagine, if approved by the staked SPS token holders, this could potentially lead to millions of dollars worth of DEC going to the DAO and being taken out of circulation over the life of the set, which I expect will help put both the community and the company in a much better position in the future. This is a prime example of how the company can forego some revenue in the short term in order to build a more successful and sustainable ecosystem over the long term, but we need to keep our expenses in check and our focus aligned in order for it to work.

While I don't want to get too off-topic, I do want to note that we are currently planning for Rebellion to be more than just a typical new card set. It is planned to introduce an entirely new mechanic into the Splinterlands game designed to give players more agency in battles and make the gameplay significantly more engaging. More details about the Rebellion set, including pricing, print amounts, and presale info, will be shared as it gets closer to launch which we are still expecting to be before the end of this year.

Beginning A New Chapter

I absolutely hate having to let great people go. These individuals are not just employees, they are friends, and they have been integral parts of the company and the Splinterlands community. Despite that, I hope that the community understands and shares my view that significant expense reductions and organizational changes were needed, and I hope that they are seen postively because I believe that they will set us up for a new phase of growth and success for the entire ecosystem beyond anything we have seen in the past.

I am looking forward to having enough funds and low enough expenses that we can really focus on building great products without needing to rush things out before they are ready or launch presales for new products years before they are expected to be released. In fact, I plan for there to be absolutely no new products until we have fully delivered and exceeded expectations on everything we have promised and/or pre-sold in the past.

Town Hall / Q&A

Last, but not least, I am planning to hold a last minute Town Hall / Q&A session in the Splinterlands Discord server (and all other regular channels) to discuss the reorganization, the plan going forward, and anything else the community would like to ask about. It is scheduled to take place in just a few minutes at 2:00 PM ET / 18:00 UTC. I hope to see you there!

Stay tuned for more updates from the Splinterlands!

Wow. Mixed Feelings. No doubt a very difficult decision. Heart goes out to everyone at the company right now.

The proposed plan for the DAO to control the Rebellion sale really allows SPS community to have a huge say in how this and all future pack sales go. Wondering if it will be up to the DAO to determine qtty, pricing strategy, burns, etc?

Its never easy to make change. Good companies will always adjust and adapt.

My heart goes out to those that were let go, I think you all put a lot of effort into the game and truly wanted to see the community do well. I definitely appreciate it and I'm sure others do as well.

I want to see Splinterlands succeed, we have a great community. This game has helped a lot of people over the last 5 years, and every employee currently (and in the past) should be proud of the lives that have been positively changed forever and how much good you've done.

Thank you.

So essentially you want the DAO to front run Splinterlands expenses to the tune of 250k with the hopes that pack sales will reimburse the treasury. I'm not in favor of this at all. It literally screams rug pull to me despite that I know it isn't the case here...

Many of you reading this will probably feel quite frustrated about the situation and the past decisions that led us here.

Maybe if Splinterlands would not have became frustratingly too hard to play, then this decision would not be needed. Many people (including me) stopped playing Splinterlands many months ago.

I played a few battles in the recent past, but I see that Splinterlands is still frustratingly too hard to play. Maybe even harder than earlier.

This is very sad, because Splinterlands was one of my favorite video games in the past. Mainly in 2019. I started playing Steem Monsters (Splinterlands) with the Beta starter set on 2018.12.30.

And Splinterlands nowadays apparently punish people, who play with the base card set. So they punish mostly the beginner players. This is mostly not encouraging people to buy cards. This is rather mostly pushing the players away.

Maybe if the developers would use different approach, then Splinterlands would be good again for many players. Especially for those, who are playing this game since years.

Good luck and have fun to everyone, who play Splinterlands. And of course thank you for the developers. Both for the fun in the past, and for future developments too. So I still hope that Splinterlands can be good again.

I'm pretty sure that I'm not going to be too focused on Land because I am waiting for Soulkeep (I love tower defense games, tbh). BUT I think you should focus on land. I feel like restructuring the roadmap with focus on land will be better both for short and long term. Why is that? Land is one of the main concept of Splinterlands and that is why it should be prioritized.

From the very start, even on whitepaper, Land is included in the plans, however, it feels like Soulkeep, a project that was just started a few months ago, will be released first than land.

I kind of see it as if I invest money, and pre-buy a condo, and then the company who is doing the construction suddenly decided to finish first the shop at the front. I, as an investor, would be baffled and offended. People who are waiting for Land is probably the ones supporting you from the very start and even though there's huge update, Land not being playable or active 5 years later, is just weird.

I think you should release land even though it's not 100% done. Think of it as a game, and then you do a patch note or DLC later to finish the game. I think the people needs to see first a working Land so they would be, "Okay. We're getting somewhere. I see where this is going." Rather than just a bunch of promises on a roadmap.

Like, doing the Rebellion, is not really necessity at this point. We have a lot of cards already and while adding a few more would be good, it's not really doing anything. Land will absorb most of the DEC by converting the cards to DEC which would increase the value of the cards, DEC and SPS in total. So, if land will be a HUGE contributor, why are you not focusing on land?

0
0
0.000
avatar

TLDR: All I want to say is to stop all the other projects, Rebellion, Soulkeep, etc and focus on building the very structure of Land so it would be playable or at least allow the players to burn DEC and improve it. Once Land is working, you can add however millions of cards you want or do random projects since you already have a DEC-Card incinerator called Land in order to maintain the price of DEC, Cards and SPS.

  1. first....., the bots uncontrollably draining the game be it dec, sps, cards, etc... it was unsustainable and very innocent not to see it... consensual perhaps
  2. second.... the idea that they were real players, the new members and that we moved to E SPORT. ....Real players competing in skill without cheats´....
Being able to look like MAGIC was an illusion, very sad for those of us who invested and bet on sps and did not sell, thinking that things were going well....it was almost all false, attributing a merit that was just luck in the nft world...
3...overprinting cards and letting automated farms drain assets to this day a disaster😒
It would have a thousand positive things that could have been done, magical objects, real and competitive tournaments at different times in weekly or monthly ranking, card crafting, experience and skills gained in combat, new skins, a thousand things that give the feeling that the game alone They just wanted to get money... greetings if anyone reads this😅

1 .primero.....

This is sad but also good news at the same time. I think a lot of the community has felt that there was a lack of focus for example the timelines not being meant even after the last restructuring and trying to be more agile. This was probably not an easy choice but it was one of the better ways to organize the work so Splinterlands can start making its way to the top of web3 gaming

I really like that they plan to change that "Over the past year or so, the company has been prioritizing short-term revenue over long term sustainability".
All these 'hypes' and 'races' to reward especially big whales who bought the most within the shortest time span, while many smaller players felt that nothing of the rewards had been left for them was not really a good motivation to steadily grow one's deck step by step. A good product should not need it be built mainly on fomo!

I really hate to see that @weirdbeard leaves the company. He was hope and inspiration for many players who without him already would have left Splinterlands since a long time.

avatar

Bots are bad and should not be part of the game.

But the economy is not ruined, because if a bot invests in the game there is no difference between a bot and a normal player.

So if we had 100k real players that only rent cards and extract value how would that be different from bots? If we have 100k real players how would that affect server costs in difference with bots? It is really the same if a player is a bot or a real player for the economy with the condition that BOT invests in the game.

Bear market and new players experience is a problem that new players are not joining. With 0.015 USD per USD, there is no hype for playing in the Bronze league atm. And game visually does not look as good as Hearthstone so that could be the reason of new players joining....

You can't just scream bots bots bots, when there are other problems that should be addressed. And if you can't win aginst bot, then that is your problem. I found that is easier to play against bots because they are predictable.

Bots used to farm reward pool from ranked battles and cashout, a real Person Is interested in buying cards and improve collection to climb upper to earn more, While a bot playing H24 can sit in silver and earn the same

Again, bots are worst for a server, they play H24, 100k humans dont generate same traffic as 100k real persons

(Edited)

How? You need energy to play the game. Both BOT and the human player will get the same amount of energy per day. So you can play 24 games per day...unless you buy more energy which is profitable until certain point

0
0
0.000

a bot has no problem playing the whole day, a human is supposed to have a life, do you work? have family? its almost impossible to reach 0 energy with a real life, a bot has no real life

the problem is, as soon as you allow bots, the door is open for botfarms, unless you introduce kyc.
and the botfarms will always activate/deactivate their account quantity so far that there is no difference between rent and rewards.
so it doesn't matter how many honest players only bot their single account.
because the botfarms will always suck it away. if sps rises by 0.2 cent. botfarm xxx simply switches 100 acounts to it and sucks it away again.
so the prices are doomed to fall.
as long as bots without kyc are allowed.
so what is the better choice? ban all bots or introduce kyc?
if you ban bots you have the additional advantage that the gameplay is better for the players.
but without bot ban or without kyc it does not work in any case, for this you do not have to be a math pro!

0

don't get me wrong, I do mean that bots are bad and I actually enjoy the game more since BOTS and BHs are banned. But under the assumption that BOT has 5k USD worth of cards it is worth the same to the economy as a player that has 5k USD worth of cards. If you do a comparison like that then BOT == normal player.

BOTs are banned because they have an unfair advantage over a human player because they can access thousands of battles and based on that BOTs can play more optimized teams. There is no difference between a BOT and a human player in the economy if both invest in the cards, SPS, and so on...

And you can't ban all bots because you can always make a BOT that will go on a website and simulate clicking like a real user.

KYC...uhh well I have 5 accounts. If that means I could play on only one...then I am against it. Maybe if we could say that one user could own like 10 accounts or something like that I would be for that. But in that case, you can always register more accounts on your family members.....

But as I said already....everything is good so long accounts that play SPL invest in SPL assets, even if we are talking about renting.

as i said, as soon as you allow bots. the botfarms come too. and these few ``good'' bots can never compensate for what the botfarms suck, because they adjust the number of accounts at will so that there is no more profit. if 5 good bots pay in, botfarmxxx just adds 500 accounts to suck that away, that's just a fight you can't win, which the paying bots can never compensate. so as i said there are only 2 solutions, either you ban all bots or you introduce kyc. because otherwise you always have the botfarms with you. you have to decide for one solution of both even if both don't taste good.....

from a gameplay point of view the complete bot ban would be optimal. but if you don't want that then you at least have to introduce kyc to at least protect the ecosystem.

Well I see your point. From that perspective there isn't an immediate difference. However, bots exist solely to extract value whereas a human generally will also 'reinvest' some of their earnings. Bots are not playing because they enjoy the game.

Agreed. Continuing to allow bots was a bad move. Course it made more money for the devs at the expense of the players so I understand why they allowed it. I just hope they haven't shafted themselves too much as well in the process to the future detriment of the game.

All of this is a consequence of indulging robots in unlimited exploitation of game assets. After the robot battle dec sps, intangible assets are sold for cash. People who believe in games and constantly purchase game assets are suffering.
I now have a way to completely defeat and completely eliminate robots.
That is to randomly disable certain recently used cards. For example, out of the 30 cards recently used, five random cards were disabled. I am also completely random, so this combination is only suitable for human players because its changes are countless. The robot will be at a loss and unable to find the best solution based on past strategies.
I hope this suggestion can be adopted, it is really one of the best ways to save the game.

0

(Edited)

Nope this isn't really true. A bot uses statistics based on available cards. Using a disable random card set will still have a statistical best combination of available cards.

It does force the bots to change the way they calculate the best set from choose best set for X ruleset to choose best set from X available cards. This is a significantly larger possibility of potential card availabilities which increases the required size of the database that bots are pulling their stats out of.

Even though this sounds bad it is actually a move in a good direction. I think that Mat has the full support of the community. It is sad that some employees had to go but after all, this is business and there were no results on their part.

Still bullish on SPL. Will support Rebellion by buying packs, and can't wait for Land and Nodes updates. These are things that will give SPl another dimension!

Interesting. I always thought Aggroed wasnt focused on the game. It all makes sense now. Whomever is at the helm of this game stands to make a fortune if they make the right moves going forward. Things have been stagnant for a while. It's time for a new beginning.

``This will allow us to focus on building a sustainable business with the opportunity for tremendous growth over the long term.´´

i hope that this will be followed by action.
because assets absolutely need a use, the more use the better, otherwise it would only be a pure speculation product. and there are millions of other things where people will rather speculate in a high speculation phase.

You took hard earned fiat under false pretenses and used it to build Invennium behind our backs. We paid for ++Splinterlands++ you shills! You get what you deserve.

"First and foremost, all projects and initiatives that are not part of the core Splinterlands product will be split out into a separate entity called Invennium Corp."

"Steem Monsters Corp. (which will operate Splinterlands and Soulkeep) will be led by me, @yabapmatt, going forward. This will ensure that the Splinterlands team is 100% focused only on Splinterlands and directly related products and that all funds taken in from Splinterlands product sales will be used exclusively for the improvement and growth of the Splinterlands game and ecosystem."

Thank you! <3
